When buying a car, you're supposed to lowball them! Never seen a dealer
turn down a reasonable offer. But I'd see it in person first. That way you
can say "I'm not paying $12k for these scratches, or the condition of this
leather!" (that's what I did with my Solara). You can find any reason to
knock down the price $500-$1k. But I would never buy a car without
seeing it first. That's common sense. The car I had before my Solara was
a '90 300zx NA. It sure did look nice at nighttime. Then the next day, I
see the crappy bondo job. Then I go get the car aligned, and they tell me
it's impossible because the car was really bad accident and had the entire
(or most of it at least) front end replaced incl. the engine. Then he shows
me under the car, and the rear end of the transmission is held on by 8-10
zip ties. I was so f'ing pissed at myself for not looking this POS over more
thoroughly.
Buying a car online is a great gamble. Like in Vegas, gamble wisely.

You kidding? We got the dealer to wave a fee for us, but that was it.

We were like "what about knocking $500 off that, that is a whole lot of miles"

they say "look, that car has been in the paper a day, and we've already had numerous inquiries (we show up at the dealer like 4 hours aftert the paper was delivered) if you dont wanna pay $7, i'm sure we'll have no trouble finding it." So we were like fine and payed. Dealers wont settle for less than they know they can get. They can get $11 for that car, there's no way they'll let it go for 10.

It's all who can haggle better man. Car dealers are really good at it. I was able
to drop my solara $1k because of a wrinkle in the leather and a busted armrest.
The leather I ironed out myself and the armrest I bought for $60 at a junkyard.
It's easier to bring a big friend to try to talk you out of it. It's all a big game,
just gotta be a good player.

in my situation, it was hardly possible.

My car would have sold in another 3 hours, they had no reason to give me a deal.

dealerships are always a pain to haggle...you can haggle them down..but not all deals are as sweet as ebay....(remember prices on ebay are always LOWER). I remember when i bough my celica from a dealership, the list price was 8999, (i low balled that sucker till 5000 drive out - ie. including taz tags and whatever...). After 4 years and 80K miles later..i sold her for 3900 :drinking:

solara prices here...

Postby mcgervey » Wed Jun 23, 2004 12:35 pm

My 01 SE V6, leather, sunroof, loaded etc (pretty normal?)with 50K was first listed with the dealer (a toyota and nissan dealer) for $14,700. Then they advertised it "reduced" to $13,000. I paid $12,700. Course I bought the extended warranty for piece of mind, which might have been a bad idea, but I like having the warranty.

I was also looking at a 01 SLE V6 with 92K, listed for $13,000, and the dealer came down to $10,700.

Those are pretty fair numbers for a toyota dealer. But they like to move the trade-ins out fast, and are a very high volume dealer.

Really the price I paid is pretty comparable to the prices I've seen on ebay. Maybe not quite as good, but within $500 to $1000 of most of the closed auctions I was monitoring, and with no travel or shipping involved. Plus buying locally I got 4.5% interest through the credit union, which I probably couldn't have gotten going out of state.

What I paid is still under all the book values too, so I'll be happy I suppose.

Good luck though.
