6 disc changers

6 disc changers

Postby mcgervey » Wed Jun 23, 2004 12:42 pm

Does anyone know, if I can find one, can I swap out the factory JBL based CD/Cass with the 6 disc unit? They look damn near identical.

Someone already told me I couldn't make the auto climate control work in my SE, but what about the 6 disc?

Thanks,

RJ

I tried to move my 3 disc changer from my gen 4 camry to my solara (since first gen solara was based on gen 4 camry). The plugs are different (even tho they look identical).

Thanks,

So you think I could put the SLE 6 disc unit in my 01 SEV6?

They look damn near identical I think, except for the "6 Disc" writing on the top.... Haven't studied them side by side, but test drove an 01 SLE for a day before I settled on the manual SE...

I think I'm going to stick with the stock head unit for appearance purposes, since it seems to work well. I'm going to put Boston's in the back as my first upgrade though, and use an FM mod for XM radio or Sirius.

Thanks for the advice.

Im not sure why but the bass seemed to diminish slightly and treble seemed to kick in a lot more, I am not sure about the internal amp output on the 6-disc. but it definitely sounds a lot cleaner and louder than the single disc.

Internal amp?

Postby mcgervey » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:51 am

Do these head units have an internal amp or is it elsewhere in the car?

If it's got it's own amp maybe it's a better unit?

I've done it in my 99 which has different plugs altogether. In 2000, they changed harnesses. You should be fine, but you might wanna get the amp and wire harness off the donor car to be 100% sure. I did and used the amp and the harness.

If you're in a rush...

Call the guys at taprecycling.com and see if
they have it.

I would be they will sell you everything you need cheaper than the one you're watching on ebay.

That thing is already up to $177 and then you're probably talking $20 shipping. According to their website they dismantle 1200 toyotas a year, and they have 14 solaras in the yard right now... Plus however many other vehicles that have that same stereo in them.

Toll Free 1-800-765-7100...

Try to bargain with them too... The first quoted me $112 shipped on a mirror... When I called back I got another guy, and he sold it to me for $87 shipped.

Good luck.

let me see if i understood it correctly
by looking at the picture from the link
both are JBL CD/tape/radio units without internal amp built-in, by looking at the back of the unit, if there is no heatsink plate, no amp.

JBL CD changer will work on gen1 solara that has JBL logo on the speaker shield plug and play.

and JBL CD changer will also with with any gen1 solara that doesn't have JBL logo on the speaker shield, but need to install the JBL external amp like the one shown on the 2nd link.

$260 buy it now, $50 for the amp.

Just an FYI... I've been thinking about putting in the 6 myself, but short on funds presently.
