Gunman, I have a quick question and i just want to make sure my caps are working correctly. My lights still dim when my system hits hard. I have (2) 1 farad caps wired into my system. I think they helped the dimming a little but it still drops drastically in voltages and i can see my indiglo gauges flicker and my ligths dim, especially when i am idling. Are my caps no good or what. More info on my setup on my sounddomain site

What kinda system are you running that you would need that 3 or 5 farads. My 2 farads are excessive. Your best bet is upgrading your alternator and battery

As for the battery i would get a Optima Yellow or Red top battery. I believe a yellow top can handle more changes and discharges (350 if i remember correctly), while the red top puts out more Cold cranking amps. If you constantly leave your system running with your car off, yellow top is for you.

According to this thread I read over at SC3, caps are relatively useless. And I have to say, it makes complete sense, both logistically, and in real life. This would also explain that even with caps, people still get headlight dimming. The guy (xtmloud) sounds like he actually knows what he's talking about. Anyway, here's the thread:

wont let us log in? for the most part caps are like a bandaid, most guys use them in part to avoid upgrading the alt. when it comes down to it, you need power to make power, in the overall system caps are usefull, but only prolong what we all know is gonna happen.............dead alternators :(

My goal was to advoid upgrading the alt. and battery at this current time. I got caps because they are like a security blanket for my electrical system. I am going to get an upgraded alternator eventually, but as of now, i don't know enough on what is a good brand. I don't wanna buy crap and get stuck frying my electrical system. I have heard horror stories

there in lies the problem, it is NOT a security blanket, all your doing is buying some time, and before you know it, your stuck somewhere. :(

Instead of buying a new alt, i had an optima yellow top installed in my trunk along with my stock battery under the hood. I am running a 1800 watt stero system, the only thing that i notice dimming is the indiglos but its pretty minor. My old system, i only had 600 watts to the subs with two 1.5 caps and my headlight looked like they were blinking. Now i upgraded to 1500 of bass and 300 interior with the yellow top and everything is good. Ive had it like this since may and havent had a problem with my alt. If u want, check out my system on my website http://www.cardomain.com/id/yahbaby98[/url]
