Ok, so my girlfriend bought me 2 12" Infinity Kappa's for a gift, rated 300w RMS, 1230w Peak, 4 ohms...so now what wattage amp should I buy? I'm thinking about Alpine but could use some suggestions as to the size. I don't need to be earth shattering, but it wouldn't hurt.

I think the Kappas, or maybe its the Perfects are pretty power sensitive. A JBL 600.1 would be good a good match. 600 watts X1 fairly inexpensive. A PPI PC 2600 would work well too. 600X1 into 4 ohms bridged. Not quite so cheap, but you gets whats ya's pays for...

Chrystie, thanks for the post..... you actually have just about the same setup I'm dreaming of. The Alpine 9815 is in the near future for me, but I'm looking into V-12 amps, I'm a big alpine fan. Did you need a capacitor for your amps, and what guage wires did you use?

Agreed, but alpine speakers and subs are terrible. If you want great sound, go with infinity/JBL (same company). It'll cost you more, but in the long run, it is well worth it.

Not true. Any subs in improperly built box(es) will sound bad. I had a customer who came in with 3 10" Audiobahn subs in a home-built plywood box with one side that pivots through hinges, and they sounded SO bad. Since one of the sub's surround was bad, I just put 2 in a properly built 3/4" MDF subbox and they sounded great. I even tested a 12W7 in a slot-ported box and the roof of his car was flexing!!!

uh actually alpines are not terrible..there's a reason that a lot of people want alpine stuff....the alpine type r's may not push out as much power, but its still one of the high end stuff that peopl want, and i remember bak in the 90's i think lamborghini was making their cars with alpine equipment straight from the factory...i dunno if they still do..or if it was lambo, but it was one of the itlian supercar makers...

Alpine subs hit too high, and the speakers are tinny. Of course I'm going to be biased, lol.

Have you seen the magnets on the Type R subs? They are not "tinny," as you spell it. Were the Alpine subs you heard in a properly built box? How did they sound "high?"

every alpine sub I have heard was pretty d@mn impressive, even if they do not have much power handling. As far as amps I am a Fosgate fan myself, although I have heard some bad things about their new stuff, every Fosgate amp I've had was build like a freakin tank, and with moderate to good SQ. For 600wrms you prolly want 4gauge wire, and a 1/2 to 1 farad cap. In a pinch you could run it with 8awg and no cap, but I really wouln't recomend it. Anything more than 4awg and a 1 farad cap would be over kill.

i just wanted to say that you must be nuts if say apline sucks....i have never heard anyone say that..including owners and installers...if alpine subs are put in the right size and properly built enclosure they sound good....as for the Fosgate amp..they may be built like tanks...but then heat up very quick..and oh yea....if your running high power your going to need two power and two ground cables..or your gonna get a voltage drop...casuing a sorts of havoc...

RF amplifiers used to be untouchable. But that stopped at the .2 series, the grey/gold trapezoidal look. I used to own these RF amps: 40x2, 40DSM, 100x2, 400x4, 2 250m2s, and 500m (stolen). I would've loved to have the power series: 250m, 250x2, 50m, or 50x2, but I still have this 100x2.


Unfortunately, once RF went mass-marketing, their quality dropped.

My friend has 3 12" Perfects with the 6500D ( MTX) wired into 1.3 ohms ( i think) ... it is bangin. He is convinced the subs can handle much more power than they present themselves. Its been a little more than a year and they are holding up well.
