should you use polyfill?
depends

best plan: build the box to spec (manufactures recommendation)-> no need for polyfill

polyfill is *sort of* a fix for enclosures that are too small for a sub

I disagree. You'll get better sound and performance from your sub by filling your box with loosely packed fiberfill. This is especially true with a vented enclosure.

polyfill can just as easily make your sub sound and perform worse
as i said, it's sort of a fix for enclosures that are too small for a sub. it makes the sub "think" that the box is bigger than it is. peter, it might be a good idea to mess around with your encloser if you aren't happy with how it sounds-- try adding polyfill (fool the sub), or try adding mdf on the inside (make the volume smaller). making it smaller will make it "tighter" and polyfill might help it get deaper.

good luck

oh wait a minute your building your own enclosure? NICE, like pro mentioned, the only time you use polyfill is when you have a tight spot and the required air space is not enough for the speaker to work properly. So in those situations you use polyfill since it slows down the back wave allowing the sub to perform as if it was in an larger enclosure.
The only thing about ported, you want to get the right port and all since your gonna ''tune'' the box to a specific frequency. You do gain about 3db in spl, but with certain types of music it can sound kinda boomy and slopy. Slot venting allows a slightly ''wider'' range of freq's. The down size is that this is slightly more difficult to built esp is you never built an enclosure. Also I sure you did already, but make sure the sub can perform in a ported enclosure. When I measured the back section behind the seats, I figured about 1.5 good cubic air space for a box. So if your sub requires more air space, then you would use polyfill depending on how much more space you need.

im getting the alpine 1041d which can go either sealed box volume: 0.5-0.8 cubic feet or ported box volume: 0.6-1.25 cubic feet. i made a template of how my box will be, and it comes out to 1.18 cubic feet. i might shrink it down to make it tighter. any suggestions for the size of port tube? and how deep? slotted vent is too hard for me, i dont have the patience...hehe.

i'd rather do it myself. i think it'll be fun. plus, i already bought the mdf.

ok for a 1.18 cube box: i dont know what you want to tune it to so i chose 35hz. with a 4" pvc pipe you would have to make it 20.4" long. let me know if you wanna change anything.

that sounds a little bit off, in that case he would have to use a flex port.
