Just buy new speakers bro, You'll be glad you did. I was planning to take the same route with my SLE and that didn't work out. I blew the rear two within a month. I now run 2 Alpine Type S 6.5 up front and 2 Kicker 6x9s in the rear with a single 12" inch subwoofer in the trunk.

I bought my rear deck speakers on ebay for 35 bucks....and they are the best speakers I've ever had. I've been lucky, front door speakers were given to me.......as well as my subwoofer. But its all relatively cheap, as long as you know what to look for, have a reasonable budget and know WHERE to look for it.

currently i have a new JVC head unit and 2 power acoustic 12's with a 2500 watt amp, and still have the stock jbl's... it doesn't sound bad but if they were upgraded it would sound a lot better

I have a Pioneer head unit. Two Alpine Type R 10s. Powered by a MTX 4025HD amp. I also have a 1600 watt power cap so my lights dont blink when the bass hits. The cap also keeps the bass sounding nice and crisp. The door speakers and rear deck speakers are stock, for now.

Change the speakers....IMO, the JBL speakers are junk.

don't worry about the rear speakers. Get some decent component speakers for the front and you'll be good to go. Amazon or ebay will be you're best bet as far as price. And don't worry about an amp... if the hu supplies a decent wattage, you're good.

Rear speakers are a waste unless you're really particular or often drive around with folks in the back seats.

The JBL speakers aren't bad so I would install the HU and subs first, try it out for a few weeks, get some opinions from passengers, then decide.

But the JBL speakers aren't the greatest either... it's still a paper cone with limited capabilities.

just to add... if you get subs with the oem speakers, you'll want an amp that allows you to adjust the gains. Keep the gains low and you'll be happy. But if this is all you want, you should get a solo 12 in sub and a low wattage amp. Otherwise, the bass will overwhelm everything else - and if thats the case, and you're building this on the cheap, you'll probably skimp on the cap and really look silly. I was at a red light behind a guy tonight with the bass going. I couldn't figure out what was more distracting... the bass, or the flickering of his tail lights ;)

Get speakers.

Been there... done that...

You will thank us for the advice. (Just DECIDE to do it... the money will come.)

Honestly, the stock JBL speakers are DEFINITELY the weak link in the system...

that's what I've done...no problems for me and been fine for four years or so....

although, I'm not that much of a sound freak either, so I think it sounds good....
