No, I'm still staying stock! This is for my friend. He has been lagging his system for almost a whole year now (amp collecting dust... MTX 81000 D)

So I've been bugging him pretty badly about how he has a component amp and a sub amp sitting in his car in the packaging... lol He's finally seriously shopping for the subs. He doesn't want to spend A LOT on subs... so he would obviously get some crappy stuff... but I'm trying to convince him to get 1 sub since it's just for bass purposes and not really for show.

So here were what I recommended to him...
1 JL W7 13"
1 JL W7 12"
2 JL W7 12"
2 JL W7 10"
1 JL W7 10"

He really wants 2 subs, so I'm pushing him toward 2 10" ones... although 1 12" would be just fine for rattling his cheaply made American vehicle. I can get a great deal on the 12" model (less than eBay prices). Then he all of a sudden says 2 12" would run him too much... so I guess he changed his budget to "AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE" ...

Remember, when voting, it's for pure sound reasons... no show involved (although he'd like to... he can't afford it ) It will be a basic set up

FYI, a 13W7 retails for $949, 12W7 retails for $749, forgot what the 10W7 is. JL has been VERY strict about which retailer can and should sell their products. So in case something gets defective, they may not warranty it if the retailer isn't on their list of approved stores.

I get it from a licensed retailer... yes, they do get them that cheap! and I get them at cost from him. Just wondering if the 10s would sound ok... although I'm pushing for him to just get 1 12"

yeah the 8 w7's are supposed to be tight....i wanna get rid of my 12's and put in like 3 10's or maybe 4 10's or something like that....the 12's tend to be a bit too "floaty" i think smaller subs would make it hit harder....

That's good, as long as the store is a licensed retailer, then you should have no problems with warranty issues if the subs do ever become defective. Even at cost, the store is still making money. ;)

You can mix subs, as long as they aren't run from the same amp. However, what would be the point, since the 12" will cover and extend a bit more the frequency that the 8" does. You won't really hear the 8" sub, as the low frequency isn't directional, and the 12" (or 10") will muzzle up the 8". The only difference is box size, as an 8" will require less space. More surface area = louder, thus 12" > 8".

Kenny,

I'll let you know. My friend asked me first, so he gets the first ones. If there are more than what he gets, that he'll give me... then I'll give you a call. So 3 10s ?

Actually you could probably wire them out of phase of each other, but only by a small margin. Will kind of have the same effect as rear fill. Make the bass feel bigger.
