So after searching I see that Brembo appear to be a preferred brand for replacing the rotors on a Solara? I also see that slotted/drilled are not worth it unless you're racing.

About a year and a half ago I replaced all my rotors with ones from Autozone (or a parts store). I was in for a rotation/alignment and the techs said that I needed new rear brake pads so I said ok and resurface the rotors - they said they couldn't resurface the rotors because there wasn't enough meat left on them.

My question is
a) Tech trying to screw me and get me to buy rotors?
b) autozone/parts store OEM rotors are thin out of the box (says the tech)?

and finally,

if they are indeed just crappy rotors that come thing - are Brembo's better and will I be able to resurface them a coupel of times before replacing them?

Thanks a lot!

yes rotors are able to be resurfaced several times..i have had my stock rotors resurfaced twice, before i went ahead and replaced them with brembo blanks and axxis pads..feels better.

Sounds like the mechanic is lazy or just wants to make a sale. Go with brembo blanks if you really need a replacement. Drilled stock-sized rotors wont do anything positive for you.

Guys, what I'm asking is whether anybody has experience with parts store OEM replacements and whether they are thinner? The mechanics were trying to tell me that they make them too thin and they wear out quickly so that they can't be resurfaced (they don't fall within spec thickness for resurfacing). Also, I put the new rotors on between 1.5 and 2 years ago and did normal amounts of driving - and I am a spirited driver ;)

On a similar topic, what about ceramic pads like Raybestos? I know the pros are that they are smoother, quieter, and easier on the rotors but what are the cons? Do they themselves wear out quicker and is the braking performance not as good as composite/metal?

I will NOT waste my money on slotted or drilled rotors because I don't do any excessive racing (although I'd like to do some autocross/road racing in the future) and have no interest in "ricing" my car out - no offense to those who are into that - to each his own.

Ok one more question, has anybody ever pulled their rotors off themselves and then taken them somewhere for resurfacing?? I'm not familiar with the process of resurfacing and don't know whether they ahve to be on the car or not - I'd love to save some $$ on labor by doing it myself if possible....

Thanks for the input all,

Kevin

Dont believe him dude. Go to another mech and get a second opinion.

Im relatively naive when it comes to pad material, so I dont want to give you any bad advice here.

Yes you can do that. They turn the rotors while they're off the car.
