How to install a new sc pulley?

Postby kondo » Wed Jan 08, 2003 3:40 pm

I just got a new pulley for my SC in the mail from pulley boys(2.75). Has any one installed one these? IT does not look too hard but I'm not sure if the belt tensioner will aoutmatically reset the belt tension or if there is some other way to do it. I'm not in a hurry to change the pulley since I am going to add a SAFC and get it dynotuned in the spring once it stops raining. Just wondering if anyone has done it themself.

Rent a pulley puller from a local auto part chain like AutoZone, they dont charge anything just a deposit and you get it back once you bring the tool back. Its very easy to use. I wouldnt think that you need a new belt and the tensioner should have enough spring action to compensate. If the belt is a little loose you can adjust the alternator out to compensate for smaller pulley, this is the way you did it before the automatic tensioner was added on. Good luck!

The alternator can be adjusted fairly simple their is a bolt that you loosen and then you can screw the adjusting screw out to make the belt have more tension.

You will need a 3" puller, available at most any tool place for not much money. Remove the nut and use the puller to remove the old pulley, it is fairly tight. The new pulley should slide right on, it has a bit more clearance than the original. Put the nut back on. The tensioner has enough range to compensate for the smaller pulley, if not then use the alternator adjustment to compensate.

You can use an open end wrench on the tensioner to pull the tensioner back to loosen the belt, then just slip the belt off the original pulley and release the tensioner. When the new pulley is on, use the wrench again to pull back the tensioner, then slip the belt around the new pulley.

This is a very simple mod, I did it in about 1/2 hour. You should gain about 10% in power.
