I was washing my car yesterday and decided that the factory rear deck speaker grilles were too ugly and I wanted to custom fabricate one. I intended originally to take off the factory JBL grill and just screw the alpine grill in its place but upon popping the grilles off I discovered they left really ugly holes and indents the alpine grille wouldnt cover. So I decided to pop the mesh off of the factory grill and use the housing and simply attach the alpine grill using the 4 mounting points. But the factory speaker housing has this stupid raised edge around where the speaker would be so I have to grind that edge down before I can attach the alpine grill and paint it all black as 1 piece.

So I gave up on finishing this project that day and decided to pop the factory grill housing back in place but realized something..
The factory grilles were something that wasnt meant to be removed in the first place. When I removed it I simply broke off all the mounting tabs...
Heres pics to explain my situation....

The indent and holes the factory grill left

Looks bad.

( On the underside of the grill ) This is a good mounting point. That ring pops in on the underside of the deck lid and holds the grill in place.

Image
this is what most of those tabs look like now. Missing the ring. So the grill sits in place but never snaps in

I had an idea to grill a thin, long wood screw from the bottom side of the deck lid into each of the mounting points to secure it in place but doing so would cause the tips of the screw to pop out on top and when removing the grill next time would cause uncessary cuts. Besides, it wouldnt look very nice either.

The intended finished project, except the whole assembly will be black

So does anyone have any ideas how to reattatch the grill housing onto the deck lid?

Yeah just super glue it or find a way to clip it on somehow. I was actually going to do the same when taking my rear speakers out (lazy) but decided I'd fsk it up and make it look ugly.

richard gave me the idea when mounting the alpine grill to the stock grill housing where the 4 holes for screws are simply use longer screws so they go past the housing and into the deck lid and then secure it in place on the other side with a nut and washer
do you think this would work? Im worried about the deck material tearing away because of its flimsy construction. Also im not sure exactly how much clearence space there is between deck lid and speaker

How about just recovering it with a different material. I know its a bitch to clean that material anyway. Plus I think that would look better than those friggin holes.....$.02

You mean make the rear deck lid out of a diff material? Man thats alot of moneys =[
Actually with the alpine grill fitted to the stock speaker housing the holes and indents will not be visible. Youll see what im talkin bout once i get it fitted, painted and put back on :D
