Tire Fitment

Okay so I've got 17x7 40mm offset and currently running 215/50/17 on it now. The car is a '98 Camry V6 LE. The question is what is the widest tire I can run without rubbing or being "too wide" for the rim? I don't want to run spacers and would like to run something a little wider to get a little more grip. I was considering something like a 225/45/17 or maybe even going shorter and doing a 215/45/17 but am afraid the shorter tire would look wierd on the car. Any help or even a pic if available would be greatly appreciated.

I actually wasn't neccesarily buying them anytime soon unless I came on a good deal, I've still got my old rims and tires stacked in the garage taking up space but how much were you asking for them shipped to 32277? How much tread is left on them? Do you have any pics of them? How many are there, assuming 4? PM me.

hey, check this out...http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html..
that site will answer your question about diameter... if you get 225/45-17, you're overall diameter will only be 1.9% off... and... as for rims.. you say you have 17x7...
7 inches = 177.8 millimeters... so by getting 225, you're 225-178 =47mm over the width of the rim. That's about 1.85 inches. Originally, 215mm = 8.4inch, so you're only 1.4 inches over... so yeah, you do the math and you do what feels right...

I wouldn't go with 225's. You have a 17x7 wheel and 225's are the widest size allowable for a 7 inch wide wheel. Putting this wide a tire on won't increase your contact patch, since the wheel is still the same width. What will happen is the tire will balloon out some, you'll have more sidewall squirm, and handling will suffer.

What I'm saying is there's no benefit in running a wider tire, in fact its usually detrimental, especially if the tire you choose has a soft sidewall.

Stick to 205's or 215's. If the wheels were 17 x 7.5 or 8 I'd say go with the 225's.
