ADVICE - Painting Stock Wheels

ADVICE - Painting Stock Wheels

Postby Fletch » Fri Aug 08, 2003 5:33 am

I've decided I want to try to paint my 16" stockers (winter wheels) black. I don't think the previous owner ever really cleaned them, they have 4 years of tar build up and corrosion. I don't need them to be perfect, I'd like to keep the cost down and do the work myself.

My plan was to remove the old tire, clean them up the best I can and spray paint them a semi-gloss black.

One of my concerns is the spray paint won't stick or it'll flake off around the rim when new tires are mounted.

Has anybody tried this?

i haven't done it, but a friend of mine did. He cleaned and sanded the wheel (the best he could). He put a few coats on (can't remember how many exactly), then he finished by putting on a clear coat. He didn't take his tires off, he just taped off the tires and sprayed the rim.

Take it to a professional shop! ask them how to save cost by doing the prep labor yourself! you'll love them for years...

yeah, spray paint will do no good on wheels, you have to get them powder coated.

I fully understand that powder coating would be much better, no question. I don't know of any shops in my area that do it and I don't know the cost associated with that.

If it costs me $10 to spray 4 wheels for one season, that's pretty cheap, the question is, how cheap would it look.

You guys are kidding. Stop jumping on the bandwagon.

Many wheels come from the manufacturer painted instead of powdercoated.

My aftermarket wheels are painted, and they look good. If you lack the skills to paint it like a pro, of course it's going to be ugly.

A couple of my frenz did it and it didn't turn out too bad. If you do it correctly it will look nice. PLus if you go to autozone or pep boys they sell stuff for painting wheels. its call wheel paint.

I removed all the crome paint and the Toyota symbol from the front grille, filled the holes with bondo and spray painted it with several coats. It looks pretty sharp and I've got several compliments.

I'm gonna give the wheels a shot with spray paint, I'll post pics if I can get my hands on a digital camera. Hopefully it won't look ricer.
