Trunk release installation question

Trunk release installation question

Postby mycrobyte » Mon Dec 29, 2003 6:32 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a Viper 350HV in my 2000 V6, anyone install their own trunk release? There are various kits on ebay, including the DEI522T. I know my Viper outputs a 200 mA on ch 2 while the button is pressed. Can someone give me some guidance on this project? I'd be happy to take pics and post a DIY of the project once done.

Thanks!!

Easy enough. DEI (Viper) makes a trunk release module, the 522T, which is basically an actuator on steroids. It's wired into the 3rd channel output on your alarm. Lining it up can take some work, and you'll want to make sure it's in there good (I use bolts to secure them, screws with speed clips will work in a pinch). Best Buy charges like $100 for everything installed, if I remember right (like $50 for the module, and $50 to install it).

Or, if your car has a trunk release button, it's just a relay and wire it up to the 3rd channel output on the remote.

Thanks Mudd! Relay?

OK, that sounds good, I can wire it up and install. Do you know if I need a relay with the 522T or can I just run the output direct to the actuator?

I don't mean to thread jack or anything, but I was wondering the same thing. I have a Clifford though, and my control does have a trunk release button but it's not hooked up. Do I need to buy a separate module to hook up to the trunk or is it just wires?

mycrobyte: wiring is easy enough. anyone can wire up a relay with thorough instruction. the difficult part you will run into is mounting the selenoid. i've done quite a number of trunk release installs and my very own car threw me a loop! fair warning:

be prepared to swear. :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

as a tip, remove the carpeting in the TRUNK LID; don't go ghetto steezy and try and mount the selenoid behind the panels in the trunk.

yep, sweety. you need a separate trunk release module. wires need to be run to the back and a relay must be wired in, too. is that the clifford matrix?

Appreciate the tip. Yep the install looks easy enough, I picked up a DEI relay to go with the 522T (total for both only 38 bucks) Ill take some digi pics and post in DIY when done. Plan on starting in the morning. :morning:

wish me luck

POP POP POP

Postby mycrobyte » Thu Jan 01, 2004 5:53 pm

Ok, install is done. Couldn't do it yesterday, had to put the remote start in the wife's jeep.

Anyway, digi cam isn't working, so I couldn't post pics. Wasn't so hard.
:o

Found the channel 2 output from the alarm and ran that to a relay as shown in the DEI trunk release install instructions. Yes, I did need a relay to go with the 455T trunk release module. This module came with a push button switch which I installed next to the hood release. Left me with one wire (the switched power wire) to run back to the trunk.

Pulled off the cover in the trunk, be careful you don't want to break any of these clips, I lifted them up with a flat screwdriver and then used a needle nose to pull them off.

I mounted the selenoid to the left of the trunk release mechanism. It was a real pain to install, I drilled two holes and realized there was just no way to get the supplied bolts to tighten down since I couldnt get a tool up on top of them. Sooo... I tossed those and dug out two bolts with locking nuts, I attached the selenoid with these and lots of lock tite. It seems secure enough. Time will tell.

The wire of the selenoid you can either just loop around the trunk release assembly or do what I did, drill a small hole in the latch as shown in the DEI instructions and run the wire through there.

It took a few adjustments to get the latch to work properly and the trunk to pop.

The cover went right back over, no cutting needed although there is a slight bulge where the selenoid is. Big deal.

The trunk opens most of the time on the first pop. Out of ten tries twice, I had to activate the selenoid twice for it pop. This is probably just an adjustment. I can live with pushing the remote twice if I have to.

Total time: 2.5 hours since I had to take a bunch of the dash off to get to my alarm brain.

it is now time to: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

Happy New year!
