Automatic Transmission and WHP Limits??

Automatic Transmission and WHP Limits??

8) Hello all,

I am in the process of having my engine repaired. I have discussed my performance desires with the guy fixing my engine and we have agreed upon what modifications will be done.

My question to all is, what is considered max permissible HP/torque with an auto tranny? I do have a tranny cooler installed.

If say 250WHP is the safe limit, what tranny modifications are necessary if say you have 280whp.

As always I appreciate your feedback. 8)

have the bell housing inside of the tranny drilled threw for better flow of tranny fluid.. www.levelten.com has a complete tranny rebuild w\ stronger components and torque convertor and stuff... but personally... I burned my overdrive clutches out w\ a little over 250whp at the wheels

I second that about Level 10. Your new friend Greg should give you feedback about that.

yeah I was loosing so much power at the tranny.. it was amazing... the pull of all my mods w\ a 7 psi pulley and an auto, feels the same as a 4psi pulley w\ my manual.. its crazy.... my buddy even said the same thing.. said that the tranny swap made all the difference... its awesome

but ive seen that some of the fastest drag cars.. are auto..
Would upgrading components to and auto be better or at least compare to the performance of a manual?

The fastest cars are auto.

Definately go with the level10 upgrade. Also you may want to look into a higher stall converter if you are going to be racing

it is true that the fastest cars are autos... but when u get that fast that the auto matters, it WAY WAY WAY out of the range of a Solara to be built... do it either for what u want... do u like driving an auto? or manual? the only time it would come down to an auto over a manual in time, would be way far down the road... and Lots of $$$$

i LOVE driving stick. but im thinkin the costs to swapping to manual could be used to upgrade the transmission to my auto. But i guess what it comes down to is would i wanna lose my convenience of the automatic over the peformance of manual..

Im still debating... grr...

What yall think? AUTO vs MANUAL

8) OK, see my message and response from my Toyota source and TRD -

Even though they said it was safe up to 300 hp, it's not a chance I would take. I would definately go with the level ten upgrades. I want to get the transmission upgrades before I go past 4psi. Ask JoeB he has the transmission upgrades from level ten.

I had the valve bodies recalibrated by Level 10 and got the high stall torque converter (unrelated) at the same time. I did that because I thought it was needed AND Gadget told me of his experience snapping second gear in his automatic 4 Runner with similar mods. He urged me to have Level 10 recalibrate the valve bodies and I have a lot of respect for his knowledge and experience. When I had the work done, I didn't ask the guys at L10 if I needed a transmission cooler but instead which transmission cooler would they recommend. They said the valve body recalibration makes the transmission so much more efficient that a cooler wasn't needed. I do however have a transmission cooler. Even though it wasn't recommended, I still think it is a good idea, call it insurance. -JoeB
