JP Performance coated exhaust

JP Performance coated exhaust

I purchased the full headers, y-pipe and 3 inch back exhaust from JP. The headers are stainless steel while the rest of the system is aluminum. The entire system comes coated to protect and to help keep heat inside the pipes and exiting the tail pipe for optimum performance. Well after only a few months the entire exhaust except the headers was rusting significantly. After a call to Eric and a little deliberation he agreed to make me a new system from the headers back. He admitted this didn't make any sense. Even though this car sees a fair amount of salt, does this make any sense? I was wondering if the two different types of metal could cause some kind of electrolysis? I have heard something like this b4 and my shop foreman said the same thing to me. He said on some of the Jap cars he has seen metal braided grounding straps to ensure against this conflict of metals. Or is this a case of just some bad coating or low grade materials? The new product was installed today. I love this exhaust and want to stay looking good. Any thoughts???? Thanks all~

tell us more about the actual rust
was it more to one area, only on the bottom, everywhere?

id be quick to say it is a bad rust-resistant material used on the metal.
salt doesnt help either

and welcome to the site btw. i'd like to hear more about your car

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. It was rusting all the way around not just the bottom closest to the ground and more so on the elongated parts fo the exhaust- so the muffler canister and 2 resonators were not rusting too much, while the rest of the piping that connects the important parts was rusting a lot. Of course the headers are stainless and are coated and don't see much exposure being away from the road. BTW~ I have the traditional laundry list of mods except head p/p & pistons. 98 Camry V6 XLE a/t 6lb trd s/c, full headers & 3inch back, URD complete fuel/timing upgrade, walbro 190, 160 t-stat, injen w/upfd cai, tranny cooler, valve bod mod from IPT, Tokicos & Eibachs, trd strut tower brace and rear swaybar, some all season 16s wheels and tires (nothing crazy). I want to maintain sleeper status- low profile. I love shocking the crap out of overpriced euro sedans and sports cars...fun fun fun. Any other thoughts from folks is appreciated on this thread topic...peace~

"Traditional laundary list of mods"? My friend, I consider yours one of the more heavily modified! It sounds like the materials on my exhaust are the same. I'm not sure about the piping being aluminum though. It's not stainless steel but not sure what it is. It is coated with high temp paint. My car has never seen salt so I'm wondering if that is the difference? I don't have a rust problem at all and the exhaust has been on there over a year and a half. -JoeB
