Timing Belt

Hey, well i just drove over the 100,000 km mark and i know they say you should change it every 100,000km but do youn necessarily have too? will i ruin anything if i dont change it ? or could i be good to go for another 25,000km ?

A timing belt is one item you DON'T want to break.

However, as the US interval is 90,000 miles, I think you could wait a few more km before you change it. But better sooner than later!

It is possible to get a look at the belt by prying the cover (left side of the engine as you look from the front (on a 3.0 v6 anyway) away and looking at the belt. You don;t have to remove everything to get a tiny look at it, see if it's cracked or has any kind of wear / damage.

Once again, you DO NOT want a timing belt to skip a tooth or break. Your car will not run, and many engines will destroy themselves if the timing gets too far off.

If your timing belt breaks it will throw off the timing obviously and your engine could bend all of your valves. That isnt a cheap fix. My car is at 87k right now. Thats the next thing on my list of things to do. I should hopefully have it done by the end of June.

getting it done as a precaution/maintainence is def cheaper n easier. Once the belft breaks it will take everything around it. It happned to my coworker 3 weeks bck..cost him $1000..

i got mine changed at 95Kmiles ..costs $550 for pump and all the belts from dealer..and a new solara as a rental

for the entire weekend..PIMP!

Ive priced it at two different toyota dealerships one told me $550 to $600 and the other just said $500. This is including the waterpump replacement. Sap Z did you buy your car brand new or used from that dealership, that they gave you a free rental? Cause that would work well for me so i can get to work.

anyways..yea my car has nothing to do with that dealership - i bought mine from a private woman. Also that was the first service of any kind from that dealer.

I basically told him that i had to drive to the city during the weekend for work n stuff..he said drop it off fri nite and pick it up when i can - i picked it up monday morning!

haha..yup drove a silver Gen 2 with ground fx all weekend

I thought that our engines are non-interferance and that breaking the timing belt would NOT cause any damage, but I might be wrong.

I have been told the same thing.
But, still I would rather be safe than have a break down in the middle of nowhere.
Pay it now or pay for it later.
And, when you decide to sell your car, be sure to save the receipt so, you can show the prospective buyer.
