painting alternator?

Postby hskrsolara » Sun Apr 23, 2006 3:12 pm

well, I am thinking of painting my denso h.o. alternator red, to match a new color theme in my engine bay, but I am having problems getting the outside shell off...I removed all of the nuts and screws, it is loose, but won't separate. I figured that it would not be good to paint it with the bare wires showing showing through the shell, probably would reduce conduction ability if those wires got some paint on them wouldn't it? Do I need a gear puller to get it separated? any help is great, thanks.

I searched and searched here and google and didnt find any info on current toyota alternator disassembly either...just old timer street rods which didn't help any.

It depends on what type of paint you want to use. The most durable would be powdercoat (this is why Chromoly tube frames for drag race cars are powdercoated). Powder coat is brushed or sprayed on, and then baked at a reasonably high temp which melts the powder, resulting in a pefectly smooth finish. You will need to disassemble the WHOLE alternator though, but it isn't tough. You just need to be carefull not to damage the brushes, and make sure you put the stator back into the thing in the right direction. You could buy a book for just about any alternator and use it as a guide, because there isn't too much difference between them.

Hope this helps,
David
