DIY exhaust question

Postby woa_its_j3ff » Sat Apr 29, 2006 8:22 am

does anyone have a DIY type of tutorial or a way to explain how to remove the stock exhaust by yourself and put on a new exhaust (note taht i said just exhaust, not a whole exhaust system) ..
I checked the tutorial page but couldnt find anything.

I think you'd be surprised how easy it really is.

Aside from jacking up the car and putting it on jack stands, it's just two bolts and a couple of rod support bushings.

It's a good 1st mod for anyone.

What does everyone think? Would an exhaust mod be useful?

so you mean just the muffler?

Theres two ways to go about it but in my opinion the easiest way to do it is to just cut the muffler off right where it begins and then just use a muffler that will fit over the existing pipe and use a band clamp to hold it down tight. You may need to use reducers to get the pipes to fit right but it usually isnt too hard to work out. It may be cheap enough to just have a muffler shop weld it on, no more than $50. Depends on exactly what you are doing.

if you get a new exhaust system then it can bolt right up, everything can technically bolt right up if you do it the right way. Crawl under your car sometime and you'll get the idea of where everything connects with the bolts.

Easy on a new car, but probably not for a 99. After a few years, it gets rusty/eroded and bolts are impossible to remove. You'll need to bring it to a shop at that point to get the bolts cut.

Axleback is bolted to the midpipe is bolted to the cat.

Catback = Axleback + Midpipe.

What i did was take off the whole mide-pipe and the exhaust muffler as one and dragged it out and took the 2 bolts that hold the muffler on to the mid-pipe.
For rust you can try PB-Blaster, that works good.

You jack up the car from the rear pinch weld and the front where the cross member is. . . You start with the rear muffler and it will be two 14mm nuts. . . after you remove that than the muffler is held up by two hangers. . . you can just pop those out. . . for the mid-pipe. . . you go under and disconnect the two 14mm nut. . . the pipe is hanging on one hanger and remove the O2 sensor. . . voila. . . you are done
