back window film

I dont think this is a repost but anyways.
Ive been wanting to try a DIY for tinting the back windows, just to .. up my skills a bit haha,
anybody know a technique on how to do this? or is it more a 'trial and error' kind of thing?
I know in some shops what they do is take regular size film, put it on.. and then add a small cutout version of the film onto the rest of the window that hasnt been covered, but .. back windows are tricky. considering taht they curve...

the guy that tinted my back window put some liquid on my back window then put the tint on the outside of the window and used a heat gun to shrink the tint to fit the windows curve.. then he took it off and it fit perfectly on the window, have fun with the dots if you try it cause they come out like arse

I tried this on my last car (Ford Contour SVT) and got help from a friend who use to work at a tinting shop. The main problem was finding film that was big enough so you don't have to use multiple pieces because no matter what, you use multiples you'll have a crease showing where they meet. We used a heat gun, think he said it was a 1500w? move quickly, and let the film curve slowly so you don't burn it and move from middle out. It took a few times and it's nice to know you did it but for me it wasn't worth all the work and money. I had to redo it 4 times because of creases, bubbles and cutting too short. Not to mention the sticky stuff that has to be cleaned off when you rip off the film to redo it.

yeah cuz i did my side windows myself and ive been wanting to do the back ones, just to save a few bucks lol.. but if my DIY doesnt work then looks like ill take it to a shop and get it done or something.. film sure is a pain to do. tried earlier, went through 2 rolls already -__-

Ya the film runs quickly and I had to find a special size for the rear (I used what they had at the tint shop). I think I ended up saving about $30 by DIY, but for the number of hours I spent I felt useless.. lol.

a friend of mine did my windows, he used to tint windows for 6 years when he was in HS/college. The best method according to him is to use 2 pieces for the back. he said 1 piece is hard to shrink to perfection in a car like ours where the back is soooo curvy. this is how he did mine and it turned out good.
1. cut about 70% of the back window from the bottom up.
2. stick it on the outside with some soapy water and slowly shrink with heat gun.
3. stick it for real on the inside
4. then do the top part where all the dots are and repeat.
5. use a defroster line as a guide.

good film always help because they shrink nicely. i got 5% madico onyx tint which is pretty good.

Keep in mind the depth in reach for the bottom portion of the rear window and the angle is hard to deal with...

id rather pay and have it done right
