Custom CAI

Custom CAI

Postby Chinky420 » Mon May 28, 2007 2:45 pm

hey guys,
i'm embarking on a custom CAI project for my 99sle. what i need, from those with injen's and aftermarket CAI's, are some pointers on the fuse box relocation, posiioning of the cone in the fender, and anything else i may need to know. i'm using 3" madrel bent aluminized tubing, and will use a AFI (AFE maybe) air filter (same brand that cpe uses), w/ my cone being 5" at the base, and 7" tall.

also, will i need to get a new MAF sensor, or would i be able to use the stock one?

also, just for my sake of mind, if someone w/ an injen wouldn't mind throwing me an inventory list of what comes out of the box, just so i can make sure my items are comparable.

if all goes well then i'll end up posting a DIY tutorial on fabricating a CAI for (hopefully) under 100 dollars.

thanks all
~kwan

Nice project all I can say is with 3 in piping you may have problems routing it underneath the fusebox without modding anything 2.75 is already a tight fit.

The fuse box doesnt need to be relocated, just taken out for the durration of the install.

and, u can use ur stock MAF

the parts = the intake tube, Cone filter, plastic coupler, 3 hose clamps.

For the extension, u will need another plastic coupler and 2 more hose clamps.

Right now, I've replaced my UPFD extension with some 3" piping. All you'll need to do is cut some metal around the fender opening.

for the CA extension, was there a resonator box in the fender, also, was the splash guard removed during installation?

also, (since i don't mind sounding like a noob), wtf is a UPFD? or rather, what does it stand for?

thx all

yes the resonator box will need to be removed from the fender.. and no you do not have to take the splash guard of. you remove the tire and unscrew a couple bolts and pull it back just enough to reach the resonator ..
As for UPFD i have no idea what that is ..

UPFD are the makers of most of the Cold Air extentions on here, including my own. Unfortunately, recently, they have gotten very shady.

No company, including injen, makes a CAI for the Solara. Most of the CAI's here are Injen Short Ram Intakes, coupled to UPFD's Cold Air extension.

I did have to bend a little chassis metal where the hole is to get my 2.75" UPFD extension to fit, but it might just be because I suck at tetris. for a 3", you would definitly need to bend that hole back.

I think I used this K&N filter, which I think is 6" at the base, 5" at the top, and 6.5" long, with an open cone top.

I definately 2nd that!!!!

If you're using 3" piping use K&N #rx4990. It's pretty much the same as Jon listed above, but made for 3".

thanks guys, i still haven't received the parts yet, so i'm just plotting and planning still. fedex tracker puts the items in dallas and i'm in san antonio, so hopefully it'll arrive by the weekend

i have my wheels off anyway right now because i'm replacing my rotors and brakes (as well as re-painting my calipers), which it why it occurred to me to ask about a resonator

are there going to be any screws or clips securing the resonator to the fender/chassis/whatever? or should i just be able to pull that SOB out once opening up the splash guard?

jon - it's good to know your cone is 6"x6.5"(x5"), since my cone isn't much bigger than that. was it a tight fit to get it in there, or was it pretty simple (once accomplishing the tetris-like maneuvering)?

as for the bending of the chassis, pliers or channel locks worked ok? or should i just take a hacksaw to the sheetmetal to open it up?

Yes theres gonna be two screws one on top of the resonator and one of the the side you'll be able to spot them
