Anyone had long term use from those $ 6.00 resistor based intake mods. My big fear is they will harm the motor.
Also as a Solara newbie ... is premium fuel the must have and worth the extra coin.

Premium fuel for a stock car is a waste, but if you have a modified car, (IE supercharged) than its definately worth the money, infact its required.

As long as your car isn't retarding timing as a result of the low octane fuel, then you won't see any gains from higher octane. The solara can run fine on 87 octane.

I've heard stories of those $6 resistors causing damage to peoples cars. If it really worked then Toyota would have put it on to begin with for $6.....and probably charged us $60.

As for the high octane gas....like Yanks said, it is a waste of money unless you need it because of forced induction. It can actually hurt the performance of an N/A vehicle. There isn't high enough compression to get complete combustion, and in cold temperatures the car may be hard to start or not start at all.

If 10.5:1 compression stock isn't enough...then what is? 10.5:1 for a stock motor is already high. Supercharged 1MZ's already see more than 11:1 c/r which is already pushing it for the stock engine parts. Perhaps you need to do more research on the 1MZ-FE or even better, your 5S-FE before you talk about a whole different league.

What are you talking about? Did I not just say that high octane fuel is necessary for S/C vehicles? And what I said was true. Higher octane requires more compression and spark for complete combustion. Maybe it is you that needs to do some reseach. Why spend money on high priced gas for a stock engine when it won't add performance. Waste your money if ya like.

First off the resistor is a joke. I guess it works in theory, but in practice do you want to risk your $20,000 car on a $6 resistor. Generally you get what you pay for, personally I don’t want to risk killing my ECU :).

Second, doesn’t higher octane fuel keep your injectors and such cleaner, thus preserving power over the 200,000+ mile life of a 5S-FE? Or is that just a myth? Personally, I don’t see how cleaner fuel, within reason, could hurt your performance, not to say that it will necessarily help either.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

I've done enough research to know whats good and bad for a 1MZ-FE engine. Considering you don't have a 1MZ-FE engine in your Solara, you really have no say in it since you know nothing about it.

regular (87) unleaded, for higher performance 91 or higher (or something along those lines...)
even with stock engine, i feel a difference with premium gas (it MIGHT be in my head, but i doubt it)

87 octane, but for improved performance, premium grade fuel is recommended....NOT required. Because the 1MZ-FE is a high compression motor, it will benefit from high octanes unlike the low compression 5S-FE or 2AZ-FE. Also, the 1MZ-FE has knock sensors which retard and advance timing according to the fuel octane you do select as soon as it detects knock/ping. Using premium fuel in a N/A 5S-FE or 2AZ-FE will be a total waste...unless you have a poorly serviced motor with alot of carbon buildup in the motor which causes excessive ping/detonation for most 4cyl engines. A well maintained 5S-FE or 2AZ-FE shouldn't experience any sort of ping under WOT or with the A/C on during a grade climb.

Personally I use 87 and occassionally switch to 89 octane since most of my driving is freeway and some city. Yes you are right premium is a waste if your car doesn't need it...epsecially on a 5S-FE. For a 1MZ-FE motor, it will only benefit it since it's designed to benefit from higher octanes considering the high compression. Because there are knock sensors for the 1MZ, it allows lower octanes to be used safely. For my car, I notice a difference in acceleration using 87 or 91 (which is premium here in CA). It's almost like night and day. There's more hesitation when you accelerate hard using 87 octane. I have a 5speed manual SE V6 and it's very evident. It's also evident with the 1MZ-FE powered 95 Avalon XLS 4spd Auto ECTi I previously drove before the Solara. There is huge hesitation between shifts. As for mileage, i get the exact same mileage using Regular, Plus or Premium. I only use Costco, Chevron and sometimes Mobil...whichever has the best price.

You don't own or probably have never driven or even worked a 1MZ-FE powered vehicle so why even talk about like you know it? I've driven several variants of the 1MZ-FE and worked on them (auto/manual Camry and Solara, Sienna, Avalon, ES300). Because in reality you really have no idea.

You're right. I don't own a V6. I have driven them and worked on them though. Actually you were wrong about which octane Toyota suggests. They suggest 91 octane.

As a moderator on this forum please try to set the proper example. Childish bickering does not add anything to the forum. Jon. p.s. what are you going to do if you get supercharged? I've read below 93 octane with the S/C, knock sensors start getting blown.
