i was talking to a mr2 driver and he told me that the AFC is just used to trick the ECU. its really just a "engine-killer" or so he calls it.

is this really the case? im not exactly sure.

I'm not sure about the "engine killer" part, but yes, the S-AFC works by "tricking" the ECU. It alters the air flow signal so that the ECU compensates by attempting to deliver more fuel. It's what's known as a piggyback computer, because it works in conjunction with the ECU, as opposed to "rechipping" the ECU. As far as I know, there are still no chips to modify the 1MZFE engine, or 3MZFE.

AFC stands for Air Flow Converter, by the way.

my understanding is that it's more of an "engine-saver" if used properly

It's just like any other tools in life, you can f00k things up if you don't use them correctly.
