Postby bfl62581 » Tue Feb 24, 2004 8:17 am

Alright, I have a confesion to make, I'm a poor college student. Why am I poor? I own a Solara. Is it the maintnance that makes me poor? No, it was when I ordered the beautiful piece of machinery fully loaded, and I'll tell you what, worth every penny of it.

Now, I plan on getting the R34 body kit soon, so I don't want to spend TOO much money on this project, but I want the aluminum mesh grill look, and actually had made a failed attempt at this prior to Tito making his.

However, I believe that with my second grill, I can use the knowledge of how I totally screwed up my first grill to not perform the same mistake. So, can someone tell me where to get good aluminum mesh from?

I was thinking HomeDepot or somewhere like that, but I am beginning to wonder about the quality. As I work full time and go to school full time, I don't have that much availability to just run around to various stores to check, so any guidance would be helpful. Thanks.

I know HOW to do what I want to do, and I know exactly what I want to do, it's just a matter of finding the perfect mesh material. Any guidance?

(I would just pay Tito, but like I said, I'm a college student, that $100 can buy me a years worth of oodles -o- noodles)

...this could become a tutorial.

Well,
If you know where to get the mesh, and you post it on this discussion, it would become a tutorial, or an extension of information.

So if anyone knows, please post it here, so this thread is in compliance.

You can probably find this info by doing a search, but this is what you can do to economically enhance your '99 to '01 grille appearance with metal mesh:

1. Go to Home Depot and get a six-pack of gutter gard mesh material. The dimensions are approximately 3' by 6". Cost is about $6.00.

2. Cut the mesh to fit the upper grill. It will take a while, and you may want to form templates to avoid scratching your car/grille. You will need tin snips to cut the mesh, and wear gloves if you don't want to cut your hands.

3. Attach the mesh to the top grill with small black zip ties, available at Walmart for $2.00 per 100 pack.

4. Use one sheet of the mesh to fit the lower grille. No cutting of mesh is necessary. Drill 3 to 5 holes on the bottom of the bar that runs accross the lower grill. Run zip ties through holes, then through the mesh to secure.

5. The metal mesh will tarnish over time. You can paint it with silver spray paint to avoid this.

6. For pictures of the finished product, go to page 3 of my www.

Hope this helps, and good luck. :fadein:

You think a clear coat paint will due fine for protection? Or Rustolium paint.

I'm thinking a clear coat would probably preserve the paint longer than only spray painting. I used Rustoleum (no clear coat), but hopefully it will last a while.

I think the R34 kit's front bumper already has a mesh grill built into it. Check out some examples on ebay under "Solara R34." So it all depends on how soon you are getting the kit. IMO, if it's soon then I would just wait.
