auto shift knob??

Postby krook » Thu Jun 22, 2006 12:15 pm

IMHO, that knob looks cheapy. I got a Levoc one from napolex.com and it's lookin' just as good as the day i bought it; no chipping of the chrome or anything.

as an advisory, when you replace your shifter to an aftermarket one, it will sit significantly high due to your OEM shift rod, so you may want to dremel it (shift knob) down a few inches. confused?

here, use this tutorial:
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showt ... post302441

the shift knob sitting so high looks dumber than braided ball-hair

Seriuosly! DIY would be nice. I started to purchase that same exact shifter six months ago with the wood grain insert. Then decided not to cause i didn't think i'd be able to install it cause of the location of the button. And no one i know knew how to go about it. But, it was the only one i found with O/D that i liked.

just use the existing od button from the stock knob... it pops out when you cut the wires of the od button once you take the knob out... just relocate the od button somewhere else... that is what i did... i have to take pics...

if you take it apart, you'll understand Daniel-san....

the actual rod that needs to be depressed to shift gears is VERTICAL. though the "shift button" is horizontal there is a diagonal-cuit piece that's fitted on the end of it which comes in contact with the vertical "shift rod"...

*sigh* just take it apart, you'll see for yourself.

i agree with krook and my fault for not understanding... you will understand it when you take it apart... even though the button is on the side the shaft is vertical... just trust us, hehe...

so when the aftermarket knob is put on then the shaft will just be permanetly pushed down and will move freely thru all the gears?

NO. the "shift rod" must be pushed down to be able to select gears.

now, unless YOU INSTALL it that way--meaning you push the aftermarket knob down AND THEN you tighten the screws to the shift rod--it will move freely.

otherwise, if you're purchasing an aftermarket A/T shift knob, there should be a button that has to be depressed in order to shift gears. when you position your shift knob on the shift rod, you want to get it in a position where when you depress the shift button on the knob it will push down on the shift rod allowing you to select your gears.

hope this helps...

more than likely aftermarket A/T knobs have a part on them that must be depressed in order to shift gears.

on the one you posted, the triangular part is probably what you press.
