Thanks for your posts and information. I just ordered the 2 gauge pod for the pillar, a boost gauge and a EGT Pyrometer. I got it from
http://www.egauges.com/ for a GREAT price! The people there were very helpful, knowlegable and friendly also.
I was going to get the Air/Fuel gauge but because of the experiences of others here, I decided on the EGT gauge instead although I knew nothing about them. I called and talked to an Autometer rep who explained it to me and made the recommendation to go with the electrical full sweep gauges. These gauges are more accurate than the others. He also recommended I go with the street series EGT rather than the one that requires the thermocouple sensor. He said the thermocouple sensor will give quicker temperature changes but will not last as long for a street application. The other nice thing was in the Full Sweep Electrical line, they have a boost gauge that has a range of 30in-hg-15psi. I like that much better than the ones that go up to 20-30psi. This way it gives more room than the TRD gauge on the vacuum side and more boost resolution than the other autometer gauges, almost as much as the TRD gauge.
4343 EGT Street Series Pyrometer w/probe + 8' wire = $105
4376 Boost 30in-hg/15PSI w/sender + T-fitting = $187
For those like me that are thinking what is a EGT gauge and how does it work, I'll share my new found knowledge. I was smart enough to figure out that I would be monitoring the exhaust gas temperature (it's in the name). Other than that, I knew little. A small temperature probe is tapped into the exhaust to record the temperature. As the car runs too lean (too much air) the temperature of the exhaust gas goes up and as it runs too rich (too much gas) the temperature goes down. There is a normal operating temperature for each car and depending on the mods especially forced air, you use the temperature range to tell when your air/fuel mixture is running to rich or lean. Hope it helps, -JoeB
