Quoted directly from your owner's manual
"Unleaded gasoline. Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher is recommended.

The higher your Octane Rating is, the slower the fuel burns during the combustion process. Pinging or detonation, is caused by your fuel completing combustion before the piston completes it's combustion cycle. Providing that the supply of octanes within the fuel is adequate, your engine will only use as much as it needs to complete the combustion cycle. This means that running race fuel is a waste of money if you do not have sufficient compression to use the octanes within the fuel.

Jon,

Most guys who have blown knock sensors were from CA because they only have 91 octane gas. Most of the other states have 93 octane which should be sufficient up to 6PSI, but then again, thats the reason I haven't put my 5.5PSI pulley on yet.

Hey Yanks my name is Aaron, not jon.
I live in south FL. Not Washington or Oregon.
But I use 93 octane and sometimes 100 octane and i still have a problem with my knock senser. Maybe my car is just too lean at higher RPM's. I need to retune my S-AFC.
In the future I will have Jims'heads and JP's headers and

You're right. I don't own a V6. I have driven them and worked on them though. Actually you were wrong about which octane Toyota suggests. They suggest 91 octane.

BTW....what Toyota dealer do you work for and what do you do there

Actually you need to read the manual a little better. It's called 91 RESEARCH OCTANE...not regular pump octane. Just because you've driven them doesn't mean you know anything about them.

And I do not work for a Toyota dealer.

Some people have been blowing knock sensors...not everyone. There are 3 people in our club who've had knock sensor problems out of the 12 that are S/C'ed with and w/o the stock pulley.

It's more of a sporadic case than anything else since the people who aren't experiencing problems are running 91 octane just fine.

As for S/C'ing, i'm probably not going that route since 1) I already have 82k miles on my car and 2) I will be looking into buying another vehicle in the near future.

I was going to say that too...but then it says 87 for the four-cylinder, and i doubt that's research octane
but either way, you cant argue with the manual
