Super Bright Headlights?

Postby CASTRO » Tue Mar 29, 2005 9:37 am

What the other people have said is true. Even PIAA sacrifices some visibility for show. I usually take my car on mountain pass runs where everything is pitch black and some of the people use HIDs/PIAA/stock etc. I use silverstarts and even though its not that nice to look at, it gets the job done because you get to see more of the natural surroundings. Anything with a bluish tint that gets the color above white will only make things harder to see. Its true for flashlights too. I have an LED flashlight thats a bright white color and still has a normal halogen bulb option too. When working with the LED, it makes things too bright and almost washes away the color. It does however cover a larger area but the halogen bulb still seems to be easier on the eyes.

The higher up the Kelvin Scale you go, the bluer the light is. Bluer light increases glare, which is better to BE seen in, but is harder to see with. Lower on the scale is yellow, which reduces glare, but looks muddier, and makes it harder to see color.

To compound the problem, On most halogen bulbs, they achieve a higher color temperature by coating the bulbs blue. This doesnt actually make the bulb any brighter, but actually produces a "whiter" or "bluer" light by blocking some of the non blue light (which is what the blue filter does). Your acutally losing brightness. Some bulbs like the Silverstars overcome this by overdrawing the bulb element, to produce more light. The downfall of this is that if your overdrawing the bulb, its not going to last as long.

Thats why I dont think any of these bulbs with a blue coating are going to last very long. They probably have overdrawn elements and will blow out in a few months. If by chance its a blue bulb and the element has a typical draw on it, then its just going to be very dim since the blue is blocking most of the non-blue light.

4000K-6000K is where you want to be for the whitest light.

Stock is 3200K. Sunlight is around 5500K

Summary?

Bright, Long Lasting, Cheap

Pick 2

Cheap and bright - Sylvania Silverstars or Xtravisions
Longlasting and cheap - Stock, or Sylvania LLs
Bright and long lasting - HIDs

If you really wanna stay off HIDs, Silverstars are a good balance, since its a very light blue coating, enough to differenciate you from others, but not enough to ruin you visibility. And changing them every few months to a year is a compromise you'll have to make if you want to stick to brighter than stock halogen bulbs. Mine blew out around 10 months.

The time they last versus the hours they last is a factor of how much you drive the car I would imagine. I only drive mine once a week at the most and only when there is no rain or snow within 100 miles.

If anything, stock is in the middle. Everything else lower than stock.

Stop the press. I left the house early this morning before sunrise and it was raining. I could hardly see a damn thing with the PIAA's. Man they coming off ASAP.

Anybody want to buy them?
