Well, I was thinking about that. I always look to see who has the incentive to lie. Which usually means follow the money.

The performance shop doesn't do rebuilds, so why lie about the rebuild. The dealership does rebuilds, but they said I didn't need it. So, that doesn't shed any light.

Frankly, I trust the dealership because I have dealt with the same guy there since I bought my car 6yrs ago. He's always been a straight shooter, so I have no reason to not trust him.

The performance shop works on high end performance cars, so I would think they would know more than a dealership. Granted, they don't work on Toyota's, but a compression test is the same for any car.

I'll just trust my guy at the dealership, then see if the performance shop will do the tune. If the engine blows during the tune, then I'll just get a new car. And the only problem there is that I don't see anything I like except for maybe the Lexus ES. I'm trying to wait for the new Supra, or hopefully a 2 door Lexus IS. But, who knows if those will happen.

So, I'm going through with the tune if they will do it.

Damn, it sucks not knowing for sure. But, I think you should go through with the tune. I'd trust the guy you've known for 6 yrs over someone you just met.

O.K., I got the 3rd opinion, and they found that there is a compression problem, but it is the 4th cylinder and not the 3rd.

I will just get the engine rebuilt. I figure I'm going to be out of pocket $5K whether I spend $5K to rebuild the engine or buy a new car and spend $5K for taxes/registration costs. At least I won't have a car note. Plus, I would have to buy a car I really don't want. I've researched everything and do not see anything I really like. (If the IS350 were a coupe I'd consider it. I do like the new Tundra, but I don't need a truck.)

With the rebuilt engine, the Solara will probably last another 5 years. So, it will be in the family until it all falls apart. I'm o.k. with that.

I plan on getting a new car in 08 or 09 anyways. I'm waiting to see how the IS-F coupe will be, if it comes out. That's what I'm waiting for. So, I'll rebuild, get it tuned, and patiently wait.
