Winter Tires

Winter Tires

Postby FLASH » Mon Oct 18, 2004 3:15 pm

They're forecasting a bad winter here in New Jersey. I was thinking about putting some 225/70/15 Winter Tires on my stock rims (after I paint them black :P ) What do you think of these? http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... mpare1=yes

The company produces only winter tires...I know they are cheap, but I dont know if the quality is. What do you guys think?

Why are you getting 225? The narrower the winter tires are, the better.

I run 205-60-16 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 in snow, best snow tires ever.

wider footprint, more coverage, more snow to get stuck b/w road and tire. which can lead to less grip.

(at least thats what i think)

Then how would a narrower tread be better than a 225?

Because this is really not a traction problem, but rather a 'get the hell outta the 3-inch deep snow' problem.

The blizzaks are great tires

This should help a lot http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/sizing.html

Select a Narrow Winter Tire for Your Vehicle.
A wide, low profile or large tire has to "plow" a wide path through snow which causes more resistance. The narrower the tire, the easier you can get through snow. We'll help verify sufficient load capacity and the appropriate diameter for your vehicle.

When you have wider tires in the snow you have less pressure (7th grade physics), and since snow is pretty slippery your wheels would just spin. When you you have narrow tires they start digging snow dipper so you have better chances on reaching ground or whatever is under the snow (hopefully not ice). This is my understanding on how norrow tires are better. Btw i'm from russia and it's very well know fact that norrow winter tires are better.

On the other hand if roads are relatively snow free, i dont think you really need norrow tires for the sake of better traction on cold/dry/wet roads (yes if you have summer tires the grip is reduced if it's cold).

So i'm thinking about 225/55/16

Do you think i can fit those on stock 16 inch rims?

Thanks

A bit off topic, but how exactly do you paint your stock rims black ? (I know it isnt just spray paint from home depot). And how much is it to get it done?

tires

Postby Sentinel » Sat Oct 29, 2005 9:15 pm

The guy I bought from seemed knowledgable? and knew that 215/55 would fit on stock 16s, but seemed to think that 225 would be too big for the stock rims.
I agree with the others about snow tires, tho. Used to live in upstate NY, and took my drivers test in icy conditions; snow tires on the 5.0 Mustang were tall, not fat.
