ok it is your typical injen short ram..got it from a sg member

my question is..i just searched for the last hour on this unit and found some bad feedback on it..a good amount to.

this is myfirst mechanical engine mod. will i have any issues whatsoever?

if there is any chance of check engine or any of that crap then i may sell it for now..this summer is strictly stereo and body..no engine mods

i dont have the time or money to be fooling with such a simple upgrade

and are you more likely to have issues w/ the extension?

for the price i would expect 100% positive feedback

or are these negative experiences contributed to people not instaling correctly

please school me

Others can probably speak about CEL's, but don't expect a "seat of your pants" power gain without supporting mods. Some say it has robbed some low end torque also.

not expecting any gains but i dont want to lose low end..lord knows v6 auto is weak enough
just got off the phone w/ injen and i was told the only known problems arise from to much oil on the filter from factory which inturn covers maf pins leading to problems..fix this by cleaning maf pins w/ carb cleaner..watch the plactic!

or incorrect installation

anyone else experience low end loss?

youre sucking in hot engine air... and yes you'd lose low end... its better off to go with a drop in filter or go CAI all the way... in between kinda sucks

This is right on. Put in a K&N replacement and keep your stock intake box, this will give youthe best of both worlds. Better air flow and no sucking of warm/hot air. Upgrade later to the full extension into the fender well. I believe there is a tutorial out there somewhere.

From what you just said, Go ahead and put in that Injen intake. You wont get a CEL light.. You only start to get a CEL once you start messing with the exhaust system. Reason being is because that one single O2 sensor under your car is a POS. When you free the flow on your car it cannot pick up the air flow fast enough and throws a CEl light. Even with that CEL light the car runs 100% better like it should with the mod. So dont be scare of it. Its just some people like me gets annoyed of it after awhile. So dont worry if the only engine mod you have is that Injen intake and no exhaust. It wont come on. Its recommended you extend the Injen into a cold air intake for cooler air unless your in dead winter then it wouldnt matter too much IMO.... Because too much Cold air can be bad.. Like say negative degrees air..

SO WHERE SI THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO GET THE EXTENSION? ARENT THERE OTHER COMPANIES THAT MAKE AN EXTENSION FOR THIS INTAKE OR AM I MISTAKEN?

AND WHAT ARE THEY GOING FOR USED?

AND WHAT ARE THEY GOING FOR NEW/ USED?

SORRY CAPS!!

i have to say you are wrong. the A/F sensor on solara is an advance quick reseponse expensive sensor, but they dont detect your air flow movement. they only detect the air and fuel ratio in your exhaust content. i dont think i hear anyone got a CEL because they alter the exhaust system, if they do, please they alter the catalytic convetor.

your intake throw a cel thats because your car is running rich, because your MAF picked up the faster air movement and it instruct the ecu to provide more fuel.

No.. I took my car to a dyno tune place that my friend owns.. He putted some probe thing into my car and ran the car... The car wasnt running rich or lean.. Its running perfectly... But then the CEL light is still on saying that one single 02 sensor cant pick up the flow at all while it is sitll working fine. Meaning it couldnt pick up lean or rich so the CEL comes on.. Thats what I meant.. I ran the code so all..

Although this isn't really on topic to the post, I think this is a common problem on the 1mz that the upstream/pre-cat, rear bank/bank1 O2 sensor, needs to be replaced on many of our cars. I did not get a CEL, but it would not alternate between rich and lean at idle so it basically needed to be replaced. An intake does not cause this though.

As far as purchasing a the short ram... I would not bother unless you are going to get the extention.

so you replaced it because it worked exceptionally well? i guess you would rather have one that is constantly out of balance :-?

No, what he is saying is the sensor was bad but not detected by the ECU and therefore not throwing a CEL. This happens in many cases and on multiple sensors, just because you don't have a CEL doesn't mean the sensor is good and working properly. When working correctly, the O2 sensor will oscilate from lean to rich. It does this as part of the closed loop control to accurately maintain the A/F ratio. It takes those readings and sends them to the ECU for control of the pulse width to the injectors. -JoeB

It sounds like you didn't understand what the shop determined or they are confused. I could give a big long explanation on how the shop can be reading a good A/F ratio at the tail pipe with a WBO2 probe and you still have a CEL. To keep it shorter, your ECU will throw a CEL if it is having to adjust too far in one direction to maintain 14.7:1 A/F in closed loop. It is easy for that to happen when you start messing with the balance setup by the factory (e.g. air flow or fuel). The O2 sensor is not picking up airflow, it compares oxygen in the exhaust to the atmospheric oxygen and the sensor is very adequate. If you are getting CELs, you are either not tuned correctly or have a bad sensor. The sensors are still fine for my engine and I'm quite certain I'm moving even more air. -JoeB

Now back on topic and to the original intent of the thread. With the Injen short ram intake, you will notice a little loss on the bottom end that is made up for in the top end giving more total power under the hp curve. I agree completely with the recommendations of using the cold air extension (only available through UPFD). Especially in the summer or general warm weather areas. The stock airbox is more restricting than a 360* filter but better than sucking hot air out of the engine compartment in the summer. If using the stock air box, I would at least pull the resonator and crap out of the fender to increase air flow. Air flow coming in will only be as good as your volumetric efficiency and ability to supply propper fuel as well as expelling spent gasses through a good exhaust.

In general though, you can add an Injen intake to the 1MZ-FE and it will NOT throw a CEL if that is the only mod and it doesn't have too much oil on the filter which would coat the wire in the MAF. The way to prevent that is just wash the new filter and only lightly oil it before installing. Our ECU has enough range to increase the fuel necessary for the extra air flow from the Injen intake without throwing a CEL. -JoeB
