Rim question

So the other day some friends and I are on the way to get pizza, and as I am driving we hear this "Thunk thunk". It wasnt just me, the conversation died..... Car seems to run fine, no problems with the guage readings, no smoke, no lag, no flat tire feel..... So I drive on, focused on food. Today when i get home I notice that my passenger front lug nut cover is GONE?!?! The donut disk and the large plastic "nut" looking thing that holds it on, GONE. After i think for a few minutes i remeber the sound, could have been it. Anyone here ever lost one of those? Can they work themselves off? Is someone looking to jack my rims? Didnt think they would attract that kind of attention 17" black.

Somehow I think the fact that they were "limited edition" is about to bite me in the ass.

I don't think a lug nut should fall off unless it was under-tightened, but I'm not too sure what you mean by "large plastic 'nut'" since real lug nuts are made out of metal.

Sorry im not being clear. On the rims i have, there is a plastic peice that covers the lug nuts, with a another platic threaded piece that screws on to hold the first in place. That is what came off. All five lug nuts, including the locking one are still tight. what came off is simply cosmetic. Functionally the car/rims are still solid.
