misc turbo questions

ok...... so i need to find the following to make my turbo more efficient and easier to monitor, I AM KEEPING THE SOLARA.

1-recirculating blow off valve, or diverter valve whichever
2-oil catch pan
3-oil cooler
4-engine thermostat - other than stock - a more accurate one

oil coolers are easy to find, most of the stuff you listed is pretty basic so I'd check out summitracing.com or jegs.com for good prices. Not sure about the BOV though, google it.

you will never go wrong with real brand name such as greddy, hks, blitz, apexi. or you can be a ebay mobile by buy all of those parts from ebay since you alredy has ebay turbo, bov, and wastegate.

Yay for keeping the solara. Shouldnt be too hard to find reliable parts under the brand names as mentioned above.

1. HKS SSQ BOV w/ recirculation attachment. GReddy BOV is also recirculable, but the HKS is just a better BOV. GReddy uses a single diaphram that will weaken and leak over time. HKS uses a dual diaphram design, that actually holds tighter as you build more boost.

2. Are you talking about an oil catch CAN or an oil PAN? I don't know of anyone that makes an oil pan for the Solara, but an oil catch can is universal, just measure the ID of the crankcase hose(my best guess would be 9-10mm). You can get one from Carbing, GReddy, Cusco

3. No one makes a kit. You can build your own off Summit parts pretty easily. Or you can buy a universal kit. Blitz and GReddy both make universal kits. I believe most if not all Toyotas are 3/4-16UNF, but don't quote me on that.

4. Your thermostat is the part that at a certain temp, opens to release the flow of coolant. This is an accurate part. Unless you are talking about your engine temp gauge. Which then you could use any aftermarket water temp gauge + sensor and see the temp of your coolant in numbers. Just about every gauge manufacturer you can think of makes a water temp gauge: AutoMeter, A'PEX-i, Blitz, Defi, GReddy, HKS, etc. And for your install, you're going to want to measure the ID of the upper radiator hose and get one of these to install your sensor:

That's if the sensor is 1/8PT, which it should be.

Oh, B&M also makes a universal oil cooler kit with both 3/4-16 and M20x1.5 fitting included. So that should come with everything you need. Its also gonna be a lot cheaper than Blitz or GReddy.

Also, I did stock check at work right now. I have pretty much everything you want/need except for the oil cooler kit. I have the BOV's, catch tanks, gauges, etc.

have you considered low temp thermostats? i know this doesn't answer you q in regd to gauging your temps, but low temp therostats would give you a better piece of mind?

TRD has a higher quality Thermostat for the Solara i-4 2az-fe. I ordered one from a website, Can't remember unless i look back on my invoices. I ordered it about 8 or 9 month ago and had it installed and has worked great. I also used in conjuction with the TRD rad. Cap.

The car runs a little cooler.. but really didn't make a big difference..

I would stay away from high pressure radiator caps and aftermarket thermostats unless you are having cooling problems already. If your car is running fine without them, then leave it.

A lower temp thermostat will just release the flow of coolant sooner, which is not always necessary. I have a friend with an Integra, his car never warms up cuz he's got a Spoon thermostat and it releases the coolant at I believe 160F, the OEM is somewhere around 180F. You don't want to run your coolant too cold, you want it warm at engine temp. Should be right around 180-200F.

A high pressure radiator cap increases the pressure in your cooling system. A system under higher pressure will require higher temps before the coolant will boil. That is good, but it causes a lot more stress on the cooling system. It might be ok now or if your car is still in new condition, but as the car ages, so will the cooling system and thats when you will start to see problems.

just to add my personal experience, Im running a 160* TRD thermostat and temps are much more stable. I use it with a 1.5bar TRD high pressure radiator cap and they both work perfect. I am boosted and since then, the stock 180* thermostat hasnt really been able to keep up and the rad ap tends to boil over when at the track. If you car is in good condition, I'd consider getting these as my temps dropped 15-20* and you gain an extra 1-2* with Readline water wetter
