My 2001 Solara with a manual trans, has 72,000 miles on the clock.
I'm starting to notice that sometimes, the engine will get a little louder, but the car doesn't necessarily go any faster. How long do clutches generally last?
If I replace my clutch, i'd like to go with something high performance. I've heard a couple of nasty things about ACT, so I'm thinking, maybe Clutchmasters stage III.
Any thoughts?

My stock clutch went out at like 60k

Replaced it with clutchmasters stock replacement. Went out at around 80k...ill never get another stock replacement. or anything from eclutchmasters because it should have lasted longer. even if i dog my car all the time

Got an ACT and it shattered...never f in with them again

Spec stage 4 in there now...its still fresh so we will see, but i like it and its not bad as far as pedal effort, but it engages like an on/off switch lol..


EDIT watch the RPMS in 5th at like 60 with the car still cold. Floor it and if the tach moves up and ure not movin new clutch time.

Slow down fellas. Before this gets ugly, I just wanted a recommendation of a good, reliable clutch. Not an insult contest.

Stock type clutches should last 80-120k miles. Of course driving habits are a large factor in clutch wear. But also driving type, such as mostly freeway vs. street, etc.

Clutchmasters are good clutches. We've used them on 300+hp cars with no problems. Spec is supposed to be a good alternative to CM, much cheaper. I have not personally used any CM clutches on my cars yet though. But I have sold 50+ units, and everyone seems to be happy with them. Exedy is also a good clutch company.

Reguardless of which comapny you go with, be sure to choose the right level that will best suite your needs.

I agree, which is why i got the stage 4 from spec. I know im hard on a clutch, i have no remorse for dropping the clutch at 6200 rpms. My new clutch feels way different than anything im used to(stock or those so called "heavy duty" clutches. You can tell somethings up the first time you take off.

I said clutchmasters stage III because when I had my S-AFCII installed that was what the guy recommended.

you may like the spec stage 3+ it has a metallic compound but its a full disc that has stock style engagement. Look it up on Horsepowerfreaks.com

CM3 is the standard recommendation. Its still a streetable clutch, and will take almost anything you can throw at it, short of high boost. So if you are staying NA, then that clutch it more than you could ever need, but still streetable.

I would suggest a Spec 3 also, its probably a lot cheaper than a CM3. And in the same class. I think a 3+ would be overkill. The price diffrence is about $100, and the 3 will already hold more power than you will ever make. The Spec 3 will hold 485tq @ the crank, the 3+ will hold 580.

I don't even see a Clutchmasters listing for the Solara or V6 Camry. But a CM3 ususally runs for $460-475ish, plus shipping. If you're interested in a Spec 3, I can get one for you for <$400 shipped to your door.

Really? Wow. thanks. I'll keep it in mind.
A couple of years ago, I exchanged emails with CM. They do have a clutch for the Solara. Its actually the same one that the MR2 uses. The sent me an estimate, but I don't remember what it was. Doesn't matter anyway. Like I said, it was a couple of years ago. I'm certain the price went up a little.
I'm going to contact a local shop and see what they charge before I get back to you. He may give me a deal if I buy the clutch from him and have him do the install.
I also bought an LSD about 4 years ago. Never had a chance to get it installed. Its just sitting on a shelf here collecting dust. I guess this would be a great opportunity to get it installed as long as I'm getting the clutch replaced.
