voltmeter question

voltmeter question

Postby woa_its_j3ff » Tue Nov 07, 2006 7:48 pm

what exactly does a voltmeter (volt meter gauge do)?
I had this put on my car basically cuz i didnt want just a single gauge on the A-pillar, but i never really got to knwo what the function of it was.

i mean when i start the car the needle stays in one position, it never moves.. is it supposed to move later on if u install more electronics or what?

It simply measures the difference in potential parallel to the voltmeter

voltmeter

While the above answer is technically correct, it assumes you know whats what.

Basically: If your car is off you should see ~ 12.5 volts, and once you get it started you should see ~14.5 volts.

when my car is off. it reads 0. the needle just turns off (or however u say it)

when it start it in warm weather like right when it came out of the shop it went to about 12, then moved slightly to the 14 area.

What is the other gauge? If you have a boost gauge, you should've just gotten the A/F ratio meter (or vice versa); I fail to see too much use for a voltmeter.
