Question on Brake Pad Break-in

Postby hari-bhari » Thu Jul 12, 2007 8:23 pm

I just got some Hawk HPS pads and brembo blank rotors and have been reading about a breaking method which consists of decelerating from 35-0 six times, and 45-0 three times. its supposed to transfer a layer of the pad onto the rotor and increase stopping power, but im worried about warping my new rotors. has anyone done this?

also, its been about 2 weeks since i got hte new pads, im wondering if its too late to do the break in now.

I have that exact same combo.

The whole point of break-in is to prevent "warping". Warping is a misnomer - The disc itself doesnt warp. Warping is when the disc break is of uneven thickness, and the uneven thickness is caused by the pad not wearing evenly on the rotor. The pad will not wear evenly on the rotor if the brakes are not broken in to eachother. If they are properly broken in, you shouldnt have any warping issues.

To properly break in, you should not be braking hard to a full stop 0mph - If the rotor stops spinning on a hard stop, then there is a chance for it to not wear evenly. Try hard braking only til about 5mph or so, and letting it cool down in between.

so theres no special layer on the face of the brake pad that i was supposed to get transferred over during break in? cuz its been a couple weeks now and im sure that layer would be gone.

Dunno if you can rebed them but always follows brake pad manufactuer's procedure for breaking in. They know what they're doing. I followed Hawk's direction for my 90 corolla and they held up great. Prob. got close to 40k miles on front pads with hard stopping and still had half my pad life left but had no more rotor surface.
