so is it a good idea to put the stock rims back on for the winter? is it the salt and snow that effects them?

 yes. name one reason why would you want to leave aftermarket wheels on during the winter?..

But for those who love,

ha...don't listen to them....

stock wheels are for wussies... I run 17s in the winter ....

can't give up the performance aspect of a lower sidewall.

As long as you wash them often (I wash my car once a week in the winter), nothing will go wrong with them. Oh, and make sure you can afford expensive super high performance winter tires as well ;)

^exaclty... I wouldnt be nearly as worried about what rims youre running as I would about the tires they are wrapped in... if your wheels have performance summer tires on them, invest in a set of snow tires for your factory rims and swap setups- this will give you the best setup for both situations at a reasonable price.

Or use a gen 3 camry for winter

the snow salt can ruin the stock wheels too. And they ain't cheap to buy either, I think a good cleaning often will do the job.

I've been thinking of asking a similar question.... How is the Solara in the winter? I just got mine this summer, so I have no idea.

With any car... unless you are in someplace that has mild winters, its stupid to run nice rims. If you have the stock skinny ass wheels and tires, they will get better traction in snow, and who cares if they get ate up with salt. Use them.
Even if you only have a nice set of after market wheels, its worth it to get a set of steels for the winter.

I've been holding out on buying a nice set of wheels, because I don't want to use them for two months then switch back the stock ones. Come this spring, the stock wheels come off... the brand new 18's go on :D

RIMS

Postby supersoldier » Tue Sep 11, 2007 9:37 am

I got my Solara in the winter and it handled very well. The salt can ruin the finish of chrome rims it eats away at the polish. I feel like stock tires handle better in adverse conditions compare to the thinner preformance tires includes winter tires because u have more tire to ground contact.

I agree there's alot of flaming on newbie's and I disagree with it. Yes they can search but if you think their question is dumb you have the choice not to respond which i think is much better than some arrogant response. I've been on this site almost a year and I'm still a newbie at times I'm hesitant on posting because I must always be on gaurd for the NEWBIE FLAMER'S; THE GUARDIANS OF THE SEARCH BUTTON; AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE PROTECTORS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

This site can be used for the power of good (being helpful and supportive)or the power of evil (taking advantage of the not as knowledgeful to make yourself feel like a bigger man).

The choice is yours (P.S. my apologies if this is a thread steal)
