Subwoofer - Cover or Not?

I will be installing a JBL sub that I bought on monday. The audio guy reccommended that i buy a cover to go over the speaker cone. This speaker has a nice design on it so I dont think I would want to cover it. I am installing it in the rear deck also so it will be very visible. What is the risk of damage. Here is a pic of it. Should I cover it and be safe, or should I leave it open for show?

How exactly do you plan to mount it to the rear deck?.....are you gonna make a huge hole?

If so, I highly advise against it because those subs are not designed to be used with no box. With that in mind, it'll more than likely cause a lot of unwanted vibrations, and it'll sound horrible.

My recommendation is to put it in a decent box in the trunk, and upgrade your 6X9'S on the rear deck instead. You'll be much happier with the end result.

Also keep in mind that having the speaker mounted in the rear deck, it will be directly exposed to the sun, which will damage it over a short period of time.

Ive already had a sub in the rear deck before and it sounded fine so there is already a hole. I was worried about the rattling too but it didnt do any rattling. Actual the owner of the audio place told me to use that sub in the rear deck in open air. IDK, i hope he is right...

I have NEVER EVER heard of a rear deck mounted subwoofer....EVER. IMO that will sound horrible. But to each there own. And if thats the case, I'd opt for the speaker grill because if its exposed...everyone will be able to see it....do you have an alarm system?? Do you see where this is going?

Is that the stock alarm system? If so...Idk how much that will stop. I've already found a few flaws in it, ways around it.

Well to each his own, but I for myself MUCH prefer to have my audio components placed in such a way where they can be heard and not seen. I dont want to judge your audio setup here, but what I have pictured in my head is lookin pretty ghetto. Is there just a big hole, or did someone actually build a proper speaker panel for it? I've been doing the whole car audio/security thing for years now, and in my experience, no free-air sub will ever sound better than a sub mounted in its own box built to specs.

And in terms of your security, the stock toyota VIP units are not difficult to work around. The glass break sensor on those things dont work too good either.

I can totally understand where you are coming from. I already have it set up for this arrangement so I will go ahead and do it.The professionals at my local audio center recommended me to that setup and that sub. They said that they had installed many like that before and turned out just as good, if not better than an enclosure/trunk setup. I will post pics on monday after installation. Thanks for ur input.
