Upgraded clutch and Flywheel

Upgraded clutch and Flywheel

I'm looking to buy Clutchmasters Stage 3 clutch, but before I go ahead with this, is it absolutely necessary to get an aftermarket flywheel with an upgraded clutch? Are there any cons to sticking with the factory fly once i do the upgrade?? Thanks

just save up till you do both, it will be more cost effective, since you have to get around up there for the clutch anyway.

In my opinion, $300 + is a lot to pay for a lightened flywheel. I would lean more towards a high flow y-pipe or smaller supercharger pulley. However, I don't have either so I can't speak for the performance gains. The thing is, a clutch job will eat up most of a day so if you want both, you should do them at the same time for time/labor savings.

You don't need a new flywheel when you replace your clutch. A lot of people replace their stock flywheel with a lightened flywheel because there are some positive performance features. I have a lightened flywheel, and I can feel some minimal gains, but I wouldn't call it a must-have type of mod. If you're already planning to replace your clutch, and you have a good deal on a light flywheel, this would be a good time to do the installation. Is it necessary? Nope.

what kind of "minimal gains" are you talking about cdssolara, just so i have an idea of just what the flywheel will do?

The reason for going to a lighter flywheel is that is has less rotatating mass than the stock flywheel. Therefore, it takes less power from the engine to make it spin, so you should be able to rev, and accelerate more quickly. The downside is that the heavier stock flywheel stores more energy, so it's a little smoother at idle and requires less rpm to launch. Since I've had my aluminum flywheel (it's a Fidanza), I notice that my car does rev a little quicker, although it's not a huge difference. I also notice that it doesn't launch quite as well, unless I get the rpm higher than I needed to before. I haven't noticed any rougher idling, so that's a good thing.

Bottom line is that it is a good mod, especially in combination with my supercharger, since it gets me to boost more quickly. If you're already planning to upgrade your clutch, it's a nice additional benefit. I would never just add a flywheel as a stand-alone mod, though, unless I could do the installation, myself. The cost of the installation, in addition to the part, is not worth the gain, in my opinion. If you've already had the tranny dropped to add a clutch, though, it makes sense to add the flywheel.

Hope that made sense.

how much did they charge for installation? Did you take it to just a regular garage or something else? Thanks again!! :)

It cost me almost $1000, but that included installing a new clutch, limited slip differential, and lightened flywheel. That was at a performance shop that had done this type of thing on many other occasions. This was their first job with a Solara, though.
