I had my car worked on by Greg a few months ago and he is a good guy to deal with! So I would also recommend getting it done by him since you are in the area.

Andy here speaking....Yes, its a huge difference as I got my 5-speed swap done by the man Greg himself. It certainly makes the car come more alive after going from auto to 5-speed. I track my car as well so it's a huge advantage of which gears I want to be in, shifting, etc. No more boring automagic!!

He did such a great job and no shift solenoid CEL's either. (its a trade secret by Greg I think as he's the only guy I know who knows how to bypass that situation)

Mechanics / labor by Greg is highly recommended if you don't know how to do the work yourself. I give him a 20 out of 10, he's that good!! :D

X2

Its silly to put $3500 into a car you could buy for $4500 with a 5 speed already in it from Toyota. Dont get me wrong, a 5 speed Solara is superior in acceleration compared to the automatic but if you do the swap youre honestly wasting your money. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Gotta agree with these guys just above........sell the auto and buy a factory 5-spd car. It sure sounds like the mechanic who has done a few of these swaps does great work and I'm not trying to deny him new business......but you can find very nice V-6, 5 spd Solaras in the under-$5,000 range.

And yes......an auto V-6 Solara is a slug compared to a 5-spd.............and the 5-spd is just more fun.

I just thought of something that slightly changes my post above. It seems that Toyota never made a V-6 Solara convertible that had a 5-spd gearbox. If you were to do a 5-spd swap on an auto V-6 convertible, you would have a very unique ride. That may justify the cost, especially if you plan on driving it for a few years.

The same goes for an SLE trim coupe that has the right combination of options, colors, and interior that you like.....because apparently Toyota never made any SLE model with both V-6 and 5-spd, either. And no V-6, 5-spd combos on anything after 2003, according to my research. I don't know if an earlier 5-spd gearbox mates up with a 3mze for 2004 and up cars, though. Maybe Gregtrd can shed some light on this.

That's true folks SLE only came as an auto.I have a friend that works for Toyota and when he saw my v6 SLE 5 speed Lara he was surprised he said that Toyota never came out with a 5 speed SLE he asked me about it and I told him my bro did the swap for me.
