Tires..HELP!

I ordered rims for my 2000 Solara.

But i didn't think about what kind of tires to get.

I know nothing about tires.

Yokohama?
Pirelli?
Falkan?
Nitto?

Can anyone help me??? please????

They (Discount tires) suggested that i get the Falken 215/40-18. This is an alien language to me. Can someone clue me in?

Are these low profile? If so, Bridgstone or Yokohama, or Pirelli are good choices. The good ones are the ones rated Z, or ZR. I have Continnetal Conti-Sport tires on my 18's, they are great, same tires on the BMW's.

I talked to a few guys, and they suggested the Kumo's 225/40/18

I ordered those Enkei's that i've been wanting for a while. I don't plan on lowering my car because i don't want to mess with the suspension, so i was just trying to find a tire that wasn't going to have my Solara riding high like a Sport Ute.

I'm hoping that i chose the right size and the right name.

America's Disc. Tires get my rims in this Thursday 7/25/02...so im kinda short on time with finalizing the tires and stuff.

If anyone has any info on these tires, please share.

trust me, the TOYOS look amazin and handle even better
nice and quiet too
khumos arent as good
rougher ride and louder
TOYO Proxes T1-S (worth the price)
otherwise, if ure lookin for cheaper michelin pilots or yokohama parada's are decent choices

What's the width of the rim?

I am guessing 7.5. If it is then you need 225 40 ZR 18.

If 7, then you need 215 40 ZR 18.

Kumho is the best way to go if you are looking to save some money. Trust me on this. Besides, they are pretty good.

One advise about ZR tires is that you must break them in for few miles. Or else they will be really slick.. When I had my Mustang, I purchased 245 40 ZR 18 Kumho, and seriously I did "all 4 wheel drift" cornering!!!

About that lowering issue... I think you might want to lower your car....
Yeah, yeah driving quality may suffer, but your car will LOOK more like SUV. You must realize that larger wheels makes the wheel and fender gap LOOK larger.. (Larger wheels don't ACTUALLY make the gap larger, but it GIVES ILLUSION of larger gap...)

Nobody knows why, but everybody knows this fact.. This is why people usually lower the car and purchasing larger wheels or vice versa.

If you lower your car slightly, it will look a LOT better. With 18" wheels and a lowered car, though, the ride will not be all that comfortable. With either 225/40/18 or 215/40/18 tires, you will actually be riding a little bit lower than with your stock tires and rims. The diameter of those tires is a little bit smaller than stock. This will actually increase the gap between the fender and tire; another reason to lower the car if you're into the appearance.

Since you mentioned that the tire sizes sounded like an alien language, here's what they mean, using the 225/40/18 as an example. 225 is the tread width, in millimeters. 40 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the tread width. This means that your sidewall height is 40% of 225 millimeters. 18 is the wheel diameter, in inches. If you compare this size tire to the 215/40/18, the 225 will be a little wider and will have a slightly higher sidewall. Hope that helps.

how much more harsh is the ride with 225/40-18 compared with 215/50-17? i plan to upgrade my 16 inch stocks to 18's and i hope my brain wont get liquified by every bump i hit. i will also be doing a lot of long distance driving from school in binghamton, ny to the amtrak autotrain station in lorton, virginia.

The tires I will only consider:

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and Pilot Sport
Yokohama AVS Sport, Parada Spec 2
Khumo Ecsta Supra 712 - Best value priced tire

Toyos are garbage sorry to say. Especially the Proxes that come with the TRD rim package. They are loud, they have very poor wet traction, and wear out too fast. I have a set of Khumo Ecsta 712s currently and they are a good set of tires for the price. My next set will be Pilot Sports.
