bargain radar detector. Is it worth it?

bargain radar detector. Is it worth it?

I live in VA where detectors are illegal, but go to school in NC for the majority of the year, so i figured maybe i should lookinto a detector.

But there is no way in hell i'm spending $200+ on a radar detector, that's suspension money right there. I'd rather just slow down.

But if i can get a Whistler PRO-58 for $90 shipped, it looks alot better than all the other Whistler bargain bin detectors, but i wonder. Is it even worth it? Will i be better off using my money on something better? Or will this help me at all on my trips to and from school?

I'm also thinking maybe it would be good, like in city driving when i'll know i can be an idiot semi-safely.

Hey, I have a Radio shack detector and it works fine for me. I get signals all the time for Ka and K bands and when I look for where I think the cop would be, he is usually there. I havent been pulled over yet but I am sure there is a lower percentage of getting pulled over with a more expensive one, You get what you pay for, or you get lucky and get more. Good luck

i had a cheap radar detector that failed me 6 times, in 3 yrs.... i got a better one and the one day i didnt used it i got one ticket... i strongly believe in the statement, you get what you pay for. Keep in mind these 6 tickets cost me about $800 total.... the new radar i've had for the past 3 yrs cost me $280, and havent had a ticket since (when using it). Just my .02

Valentine 1 is the BEST :P

Dropped $400 on it, but it's definitely worth every cent.

If you like to speed, buy it!

::in a quiet whisper:: valentine is not the best, though the bogey counter is the bomb, i have both, an 8500 (in my solara) and a v1 in my crx, imo the 8500 has better sensitivity.
If it doesn't kill you.....it only makes you faster!

I would much rather have escort 1800 than V1.

Coming to cheap detectors..I have BEL 880 and its really nice (i've had 4 bel's before..and they all are with family members) I've only been caught once...and i'm a speed DEMON on free roads....(on ebay there is this 970 thats good as well)

I remember hearing way back that escort and valentine, despite Valentine's "proprietary" approach at their devices, split technology and other information with escort, and vice versa. Both are VERY good.
