correct..as long as the heat is on full blast the thermostat will be in the open position and the coolant will circulate throughout the whole system.

if the white plug is left to drain while still filling up top and the circulation is passing through the block then...you get the idea..

glad you understood the coolant 50/50 mix thingy..i was starting to second guess myself!

i know it is right..worked great for me

one thing i would caution you on is continually (2-4 times)checking the filler cap after a flush and fill as it may need to be topped of a few times..and before you top it off be sure to squeeze that larger hose that leads to it..there is air that get trapped in there...the less air in the system the more efficient it will work..

thermostat opening

Hey Guys

I dont think you are right about the thermostat opening when the cabin temperature setting is set to hot. From what i learned the thermostat controls only cooling fluid going into the radiator, and the thermostat can only be opened by a certain temperature i thinkg 170-180 F on our solaras according to the haynes manual.

So the setting the cabin heater to hot will only open up the passage to the heater core which is works kind of like a radiator, but it is not the big radiator that the thermostat grants access too.

A complete flush while the engine is off and the car is cold ( recommended everywhere) would require removing the thermostat housing then removing the thermostat, then replacing the housing without the thermostat and Setting the cabin heat knob to hot.

This will open up all the channels of the cooling system. You then can stick that garden hose to the opening on top of the radiator after your remove the top radiator hose.

and you should be able to watch the water come out of the top radiator hose.

This info is based on what i found on howstuffworks.com and the haynes manual for my 99 solara.

I'm preparing to do this job myself but I cant find the dam thermostat housing ANyone have pictures of theirs??
