Adding Custom Center rear Tow Hook

Adding Custom Center rear Tow Hook

Postby kenny6683 » Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:33 pm

You will need:
-Rear Towhook
-(2) 3/8 x 6" long bolt with nut and washer
-Door Striker thats a bit longer than this photo...
i think you can find one at any junkyard or auto stores should carry them (not sure i had one lying around)
Image
Mine has this shape
Image

-drill with 3/8 bit to make holes through trunk. This bit should be at least 3" long

In this photo you can see where i made the holes in the trunk...basically the location is right behind the paneling, but dont worry after this is complete your panel will go back like stock
Image

The reason you notice there are an extra 2 holes next to the bolts is because when drilling through you can only get half way up from the bottom (under car)...then there is a gap. So i had to drill from the top as well (inside trunk) If you use a longer bit...about 6" long you might be able to go right up from under one shot
Image

Image

Notice where i placed the striker...basically is the beginning of the actual trunk and right after bumper support.
Image
bolt became rusted because i cross threaded bolt so it may not be removed from outside anymore (too many thieves in NY)
Image

I was only able to get one bolt into the striker but it holds nice and tight. Plus this mod is mostly for show as I never actually tested to see if it works.
Image
finished product...you may have seen some red on tow hook...thats because i sprayed mine black : )
Image
Image once again dont mind that dumb bumper light...it will be coming off soon

whats the point in having it? One thing it is good for is the retards who dont know how big their car is and bump into you when parking behind you.. or getting rear ended at mcdonalds like i did in my truck... that guy has a nice little hole in his hood now :)

the point of tow hooks is when your car has a kit and you dont want towing to ruin it if you ever get towed...but it really does protect the bumper from stupid people who cant park

 I don't understand neither concept of what you guys are talking about. A TOW HOOK doesn't stick out far enough to prevent people from seeing it or even protecting you from damage--I think you guys are thinking TRAILER HITCH. And being most tow truck drivers' wet dream is jacking parked FWD cars from the rear for fun anyway, I don't wanna give them an advantage. I think I'd understand the idea more if the OP stated what the purpose of installing his rear tow hook.

I trying to figure out what the hell you were talking about. Ofcourse Ive seen the bad parkers but nothing to worry about. Then I read your location: Queens ny

you guys are right! FWD shouldnt be towed from the rear. I basically just did it for the look and here in Nyc cars park bumper to bumper. So if a car was very close to mine first thing they would touch is my tow hook. one more thing my solara is manual transmission...so as long as it is free from gears "neutral" you can tow from front or rear..correct me if i'm wrong

Im not bashing on it, i think it looks pretty cool actually.

but just the functionality of it on a FWD car was questionable.

Our cars don't need to be towed - they're too reliable (unless you bypass the knock sensors  )

I think it looks cool. What about putting two in the back, one on either side.

I guess that would be a good protection against parking lot drivers, it doesn't distract me from looking at the body kit so that is a good thing.

I would paint the tow hook flat black so it hides even better.
