Key Fobs for 2005 solara not working

Hello everyone,
I am the proud new owner of a 2005 Solara Convertible SLE and i'm new to this forum. Here is my dilemma:
The used car dealer sold me the car with 2 master keys and 2 key fobs. Neither key fob worked when I bought the car, but I figured I would either need to buy new batteries or reprogram the remote, so I didnt make a big deal about them not working (I did this with my last car, a honda, so I thought a toyota would be just as simple). In the past 2 days i have replaced the batteries and have tried the programming sequence a billion times. The remotes are working intermittently and I always have to press the buttons very hard for a long time to get a response, if I get a response at all. The trunk release has only worked one time with only one of the fobs, but otherwise I cant get the trunk to open with either fob. The remote locking and unlocking works about 65% of the time. Ive searched and googled for hours, but im not finding anything that really explains this problem. i already have the remote programming instructions and have successfully done this, but what I need is for the remotes to work WELL and consistently. I have checked to make sure the numbers on the back of the remotes are right (FCC numbers etc), and they are correct.
Im wondering where the sensor is inside the car...maybe it needs to be cleaned or there is something blocking the transmittal between the fob and the car? Is there a simple problem or solution I may have overlooked?
This is the only thing wrong with the car and it's the one thing that is not allowing me to enjoy the vehicle like a proud new owner should. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!!
Thanks!
