Horns Stopped Working

Horns Stopped Working

Postby wkbrdr91 » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:11 am

Hey guys, this morning on my way to school my horns decided to not work.

I got cut off, and held the horn for about 5 seconds, when they just stopped working.

Now, ive got more horns than you should (Wolo bad-boy, 2 jeep horns, and stock ones i believe), but ive had these horns in the car for about 2 years now, so i had to up my 10 amp fuse to a 20 amp, and i figured id just have to replace the 20 when i got home.... well the fuse isnt blown :o

when i honk the horns, i hear a click coming from the engine bay (im assuming fuse box), but nothing happens. From a brief study the connections all seem ok, ill take more time to look at it this weekend though.

So anyone know what could be wrong????

The click means the relay is getting power. Therefore, everything before the relay should be fine (fuse, etc).

However, the relay could have gone bad.

How did you wire up your other horns?

Did you have your dad check the horns out and see what was wrong? He can probably fix it.

5 seconds? That driver must have pissed you off pretty good.

At least it didn't happen during the recent CFL meet where you were showing the horns, can you imagine the reaction of the group of people that were there if the horns didn't work then?

Sorry I couldn't help out, but I am a total newb at electronics and all that wiring stuff.

It felt like 5 seconds, but after asking my girlfriend who was behind me, she said it was barley 2. and ya they decided to change lanes (into mine) while we were side by side.

And i wash my car every week, but it had been a few days since it got washed.

The horns (at least for now i think) are wired up seperately on a switch next to the steerin wheel... but everytime i honk it, my radar detector (Escort Passport) goes off in the "LASER" mode until i unplug it and plug it back in... no idea why...

Heres my temporary horn switch, wired directly to the battery, taking it into Toyota Sunday morning before church to let them deal with it...

after installing the new neons, the horn no longer sets off my radar detector though lol

you shouldn't use the same source of power or ground for each...run a separate wire from battery if your using so many horns. Also check all the terminals on the horns as sometimes they rust

ok so as we were taking out the aftermarket horns we realized some wires were indeed disconnected... dont know how we missed that...

also discovered that my bad-boy horns sound like dying ducks... i didnt notice it from inside the car... so i went up to the store and picked up some new, louder, air horns!! oh and we took that ghetto horn switch out, and hooked it back up to the regular spot on steering wheel, so now my alarm will actually work!!
