weird transmission?

2004 solara v6 sle
Before this, my engine would run at about 1600 rpm at 65 mph getting somewhere around 30-36 mpg, then today I had had a little fun with "S" mode, went back to D after and now rpm is around 2000 at 65 mph getting around 40-47 mpg. Is this normal or what? If not, what can I do to fix it?

I wouldn't fix anything if my V6 can get 47mpg

Is it possible that overdrive is not engaging?

It is impossible to achieve 40 mpg even with the Gen 2 four banger, the best I ever got was a 39.2mpg and I had to try really really hard to get that number.

idk I was cruising at 65 mph, I looked at my multi function display it said around 40, to make sure I wasnt seeing things I floored it and it went to 12.
So, what avg rpm you guys are getting with a gen 2/2.5 v6 cruising around 65-70?

Like the "miles-until-empty" take numbers on the "miles-per-gallon" display with a huge grain of salt.

Ahhh, I see now. The display is probably set to real time mpg and not the average mpg. If you use the sport mode and leave it in a lower gear, then take your foot off the gas(coasting) you can get the real time to 99mpg. So you probably weren't seeing things, just had the display on the realtime function.

I always thought the car in sport mode uses more gas.

It most likely does. The real time mpg is dependant on many factors, ie. whether or not you're on an incline, decline, flat, accelerating or decelerating.
