Rear End Howl

Rear End Howl

Postby Jeffrey Olson » Fri Nov 22, 2013 3:40 pm

I've got a 2006 SLE with 138K on it. The car has had a howl coming from the rear end since I bought it 25K ago. It's gotten incrementally louder.

It's not road or tire noise - that changes with the surface. The howl is there no matter what the surface, and heard above 40 mph. It's a low howl. The howl changes with speed, picking up in pitch when going faster, lowering in pitch when slowing down. It's almost one of those eerie halloween scary sound from the forest howls.

Any experience and/or ideas on what to look at before I take it in and have it diagnosed?

Thanks...

Jeff

I replaced the hub on my 1999 SE - pretty straightforward. Anyone have an opinion on OEM vs. the $60 part found at these places?

Sounds like bearings, maybe. No pun intended.
