HOOD SCOOP?

HOOD SCOOP?

Postby RON » Fri May 29, 2009 10:36 pm

Anyone here give it a thought? Don't want it *tacky*..but for SC, it might be worth considering for cooling. I'm not a *classic* nut, so a change in style doesn't bother me. This application comes with a grill inside the scoop.
Here's an example:

pass on the scoop
You wanna keep the engine cool? Run a Ram Air intake that leads from the fromt bumper to the intake filter element.

Go for it!, although it would look better if molded and paint, it still is unique. But if you intend to use it for cooling, be prepared to chop your hood. And ppl cant call it ricer, when you've got the mods to back it up.

Yes..I would have the body shop MOLD the edges ..or blend them in. Paint match for sure. Naturally, the hood would need to be cut open. I know a body guy and could get it done fairly cheap.

Question...would RAIN pose a problem? Lot's of cars have 'em, so I don't think it would be.

Found this older post here:

And this was *ONLY* modestly venting the hood. A scoop in front of the SC would probably keep things MUCH cooler when the car is moving, since it's a form of RAM air..not simply *venting*.

does your car have an overheating problem? It really shouldnt..

Rather than hack up your hood I may also suggest adding methanol injection. It is quite expensive ( be prepared to out at least 450 dollars ) but the benefits are boundless. The car revs much freeer from all RPM and the engine runs very very cool if you jet properly.

Not exactly my cup of tea.

Hood scoops were originally designed to feed more air directly into the carburator which was normally, directly in the center of the engine bay and center of the hood.

If you are using a supercharger, the air comes from the drivers side of the car, where it is filtered before it enters the engine.

If you put a scoop in the center of your hood, it would really have no performance adding abilities. If you put the scoop on the side, where it could really function, I think it would cosmetically hurt the car.

Cosmetics aside, the height as shown won't do anything. The forward surface of the hood is already well designed to deflect air up over the car smoothly, and the scoop is almost entirely within either the boundary layer or surface turbulence.
Has to be at least (just a guess) 2" taller to pick up "clean" air.
That's why they put them on the front: they can be smaller.

Gregs old one.

Greg's new one flipped around.

He doens't have the picture of it facing forward anywhere I don't think. While something that small won't provide the airflow of a cowl hood. It WILL work and it IS functional. And honestly I don't think looks half bad at all.
