ok, I am NOT a newbie here, i lost my old screen name. dont remember it. had to get a new one.
I finally started buying my turbo parts. hopefully i will have it all within the next month.

so far this is what has been delivered this week...
Greddy Type RS BOV
Edlebrock intercooler
Type R adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator
RAz short shifter
VDO boost gauge
Autometer gauge pod

I have lots of questions and have researched alot of things on here over the past year about turbo charging my '00 solara.

what parts are people recomending to finish my project? money is not as much of an object but i am not going to spend $5000 on this project. my goal is 350hp.

I am no newbie to building custom turbo cars from N/A so i am not a fool.

I think i am going to get the T3/T4 internal gated turbo .60 a/r

what injectors should i use? can i have the computer reflashed at the dealer to accept the new injectors and to remove my govenor and rev limiter?

are there any tuning issues i need to be aware of??

how much boost will the stock 1mz internals handle? how much approx power will 10psi make for this 1mz in reality?

one more thing, i saw a post on toyota nation that showed a SC version laying down 233hp at 4.5 lbs boost on the dyno. accurate info?

what is the stock dyno power on the solara 1st gen?

360cc injectors will be fine, you would need a standalone unit such as the AEM fic, or you might be okay to use the apex safc II. You would also need a Walbro 255lph fuel pump which requires a slight modification of the housing to fit, but there's a tutorial for that. Jims fuel mod is a must for boosted applications with the 1mz. The 1mz can handle around 7psi on stock internals, 10 psi would be risking it. The t3/t4 turbo is fine for this application, but if its the cheap ebay one, you need to get it resealed with greddy seals and bearings, and also you should get it balanced. With the proper fuel and ignition upgrades, 350 hp is definatly reachable, there's a 1mz Camry on here, HKSboost, who got 500+hp with 20 something pounds of boost. I myself am in the process of building a rear mounted turbo system, as well as another member, 1GSe.

Also, this: http://www.customcarscentral.com/ape405 ... makes.html would allow you to remove the top speed limiter, and change the rev limiter. As well as a bunch of other useful stuff.

I would for sure recommend a standalone for a custom turbo setup. Also look into picking up a wideband AFR gauge. Then, of course, you are going to need someone to do all of the plumbing- turbo manifold, down pipe, all of the intercooler piping, and many other things along the way. For sure not a small undertaking...

for injectors look here

piping, go to these guys

I've never heard of getting the ecu reflashed....i'm not even sure if ours can. I'd go the AEM FIC route. That's what I'm currently using. Other toyota/lexus guys have had success with it. I'd get rid of the FPR unless you're going to change to a return style fuel system. If not, pick up a 255 walbro from URD and the injectors from my other post. The turbo should work well. I didn't do much research on it, but looking at the compressor map i should be fine. Whether or not it will get you to your goal, i dunno. If you're looking to build on the cheap, find a used Holset (HX35 or H1C should be perfect) I got 2 H1Cs sitting on my floor.....one is waiting to go on.

::edit::

relocate the battery to the trunk and find somewhere to put the cruise control (or get rid of it)

Personally i'd go with the non-wastegated turbo and get an external w/g. There's definitely not enough room up front for the turbo and plumbing with the factory fans....sooo.... check this out

Stock ECU cannot be flashed, so your only option is a stand alone unit. I've hear great thing about the AEM FIC. I'm waiting for mine to come in. Your probably going to want to go with a externally gated turbo though, with the amount of boost your going to have to use to get 350hp your going to want something reliable. There was another post were a guy was running between 10-12 psi and shot 2 rods right out the block.

awesome! great info! thanks guys

yeah, i got the Walbro 255 on its way today. I stupidly ordered the FPR before realizing that our cars dont have a return system. So now, i have a great FPR for sale.

As far as the piping, i have a wire fed welder machine in the garage. I just need to get some pipe bends and straits and build a mock up.

The battery i have realized is a definate to go to the trunk. a single turbo would be better placed where the battery is like some of you have done.

Yesterday, I drilled some holes to mount my intercooler on the bottom of the radiator support. Bad idea, i didnt pay attention to the A/C Condenser resting behind it. I drilled a hole straight thru it, lost all R134. Today, i found a used camry condenser. I replaced it and recharged it. good to go. cant stand going without my a/c. it stays hot until Nov here.

The turbo i found is at Texas turbos. Its a T3/T4B .60 a/r. Maps look good and seems to be a great turbo for most of the power band. The techs there helped me decide which is the best for the 1mz. The turbo should realistically be able to support 400hp. It is internally gated and is set for 8psi. Of course, i will lose some boost do to the piping and I/C pressure drop. I should be safe.

I installed the short shifter today. Man! what a difference that made!
I can already tell that when i start boosting by next month, a new clutch is going to become a necessity.

Any recommendations on a good street/strip clutch? I doubt this clutch will handle boost, at least not for long.

Well, thats my day today. Hopefully some more parts will come in tomorrow!

Thanks so much to everyone for all your info!!

fuel injectors?
I have read in a few places on the internet that people are using the 330cc injectors from a non turbo supra. Anyone using these?

And what is Jim's Fuel mod?

non-turbo supra = sc300. mine came from an sc300 and i'm running 7.5psi boost on the trd blower and a walbro 255 pump, still on a returnless system and i do NOT have jim's fuel mod. no issues. i do have an safc to help control em tho.
