I ran La Carrea classic in Mexico back in 1988. It was almost 100 miles flat out. I passed a guy who was killed on his motorcycle and saw my buddy go off a cliff in that race (he lived)....two guys died crashing their cars there in later years. Our club ran a 100 Mi race out of Eli Nevada and I decided to *pass*. One guy in a Ferarri died going 140 plus on a straight. His family wound up suing Yokohama Tire..(yeah...right  )

Thanks for posting this very sobering infomation, Ron. They truly are words for the wise. Unfortunately, the stupid will continue to ignore them.

120? who said? they are wrong.

note he said 2azfe - the 4cyl.

most 4cyls are built with T-rated tires, which means like 115... for the TIRE. most V6s ship with H or V rated tires, which are good to like 130-140.

that's the main reason for the governor.

if you have Z rated (150+) tires, then it might be safer to remove the governor.

but like everyone else said - going that fast on a public road is just plain dumb. i HAD the rsm on my car, and pretty much all it did was change the governor. I don't need that, so i took it off.

Ron - in my current 98 (but with good struts, ground controls, and 18x8 rims w/ nice big meats on em) tiem was consistently hitting 140 at the end of the front straight at Texas World Speedway in the 2.9 mile CCW configuration. Some purpose built track cars were getting upwards of 160 at the end of the front straight. At the same time, I was hitting about 95 in my miata on falken azenis st-215's. he and i were on the track at the same time, but were apparently consistently opposite of each other, because we never saw each other during our sessions. go figure.

On a track with a BIG straight you could *theoretically* hit 140 in a car like ours....but I really have my doubts on *tiem* hitting that speed in an SC car. Certainly *track cars* can easily exceed 150 MPH..we don't (nor does tiem) have *track cars*. BTW if tiem was hitting 140 and you 95, he DEFINITELY would have closed in on you rather quickly unless..1) he was real SH$$TY in the turns or 2) the session was very brief.

half hour sessions, and i guess he wasn't that good in the turns. entering turn one/two (which is really just one sweeper) i just had to tap the brakes a bit to settle the car coming down off the high bank onto the flat infield, but had to slow all the way down to 65 for turn 3. TWS's 2.9 CCW is a great course for the miata - i only have to brake in 3 places out of i think 15 turns. btw, i think the front straight is a thousand feet long. can't remember for sure.

we were stuck in the beginner group at that event. for example: because a twin turbo viper on hoosiers was SLOWING ME DOWN in the turns, i was allowed to pass him on the next straight. i bet he just LOVED that. i had 1/8th his horsepower and probably 1/4 his grip, yet i was pushing him everywhere BUT the straights.

one of my favorite shots from that day:

that rig on the back was a camera mount. actually gave some pretty decent footage.

on the flipside, a brand new (at the time) 2004 M3 lapped me. twice. in the same session. THAT is fast. obviously he was not a beginner.

man i wish i could have afforded to buy, repair, and get new tires for those wheels...

Trust me..he wasn't going 140  ...the straight would have to be at least
1/2 mile for him to hit that speed. Like I said, I had a VERY fast car on a relatively *fast track* (Willow Springs) and I was just under 130 at the end. Don't forget he would have to allow for BRAKING from that speed and unless he had AWSOME brakes, a *beginner* would have to allow sufficient distance to SLOW down from 140 for the TURN at the end of the straight! That would SHORTEN his *straight ahead* distance considerably. At Willow I was able to go DEEP into the first turn so I could wait until the VERY END to initiate braking.

I've got the car set-up pretty well, and it feels really good and stable at speeds. I lowered it 1.5 inches, changed the rear brakes from drum to disc, running some Cont. conti extreem contact 235/40ZR18. So it sticks to the road really well. I do want to track it at some point though, and trust there are very few roads were I would push that 140+ mark. And its not something that would be done often. Its just like the reason for have the additional HP, dont always use it but its there if I want it.
